I got a bunch of videotapes in Digital 8 format of the rugrat terrorising our home and want to share the distruction with the family. Anyone have any suggestions for DVD authoring software to edit the videos and do the menus etc.

I have been converting a number of the Jacobs masterclass tapes to DVD, all are analog - didn't have digital back then.

Anyway, I have been using Pinacle Studio version 9. You can do all kinds of editing (like the samplers I put on my web page) and burn DVD's. The burning process takes a while, I did most of it at night.

It's been a few years since I've played around with video editing, so my experience isn't quite up to date. Back around 1999-2000 Pinnacle was a pretty good product, but it was very difficult to use and VERY expensive. I think that Ulead made a decent product at the time, more targeted towards home users.

Also, if your video camera has a firewire port (sony calls this iLink i think) then all you need is a cheap firewire card to pull the video onto your computer. If you've just got normal composite / Svideo output then you'll have to buy a video capture device of some sort.

I have no guarantees about it's quality, but Windows XP does include some kind of lite movie editor too -- to compete with iMovie on the mac.
