in turning off an entire component stereo system (receiver and cd plyr) while the cd is still playing? (The cd power is connected the switched power outlet in the receiver.) I do this, but still wonder if there is any long or short term damage to anything. Thanks forn any info you can provide.

Couldn't be any worse than pulling the plug of the CD player from an external socket, or a power failure.

I have no specific knowledge, but I'm betting not.

Shouldn't be a problem. It's not like killing the power on your computer while the HDD is being accessed -- where it's possible for a write command to mess something up.

Unlike computer disc drives and every type of tape known to man, not to mention vinyl records, nothing actually touches the surface of a CD to play it. The laser which reflects off the metallized surface needs not park to avoid damaging the disc or "head" unit. Shut it down however you wish.
