I used the M-Audio for many hours while engraving music via Finale. It's very simple and easy to use. I really liked it. However, if you don't want a "cheap plastic synth," this may not be for you. The keys are unweighted. But I'm not sure there are controllers out there that have weighted keys. I have a Korg X5D, which I love and use every day. Keys are unweighted. If you want weighted, you might want to look into a Triton, but I don't know if they have USB hookups, and they have way more bells and whistles to be considered controllers.
