If you are over 45, newly divorced, in a dead end job, and have a bachelor's degree, have I got a deal for you.
You can teach English in Vietnam. Very few of the really successful teachers ever taught English seriously, except maybe as a substitute school teacher. You really only need a bachelor's degree in any field. If you have a master's degree and teaching experience, after being here for a few months you can qualify as an administrator. Administrators here are basically foreign native English speakers who teach the Vietnamese teachers of English how to pronounce simple words. Work hours are odd but they won't kill you.
Your first job will probably be in a private English language school. There are over 600 English language schools in Saigon. There are always ten or twenty actively seeking teachers all year, except during Tet (same as Chinese New Year). But everything closes at Tet for two weeks.
When you aren't teaching, you can go shopping, dining, or drinking. You will discover, especially if you don't smoke, swear, or do anything else in that vein, that you actually enjoy it here and there are lots of people who want you to be here.
If you go to the restaurants the other foreigners go to, such as Pizza Hut and the Texas Bar BQ, you will find that the girl taking your order wants to practice her English with you, once everyone else's orders are filled. By all means, do this.
I have heard of budding romances started through this kind of lesson giving. You also might get a discount on your meal if a waitress really likes you.
One of my foreign colleagues has likened this notoriety as "Rock Star Status." You are popular with everyone.
