Due to some ridiculous responses from this site.... (And the same people posting rudely on YouTube) and for people who insinuate things they have no idea about, I’ve decided to pull this down.

I put this up not to be judged, just to share... if you’ve got opinions, feel free to post them the same way I did. and see what kind of responses you get.

Why do you have to pay so much for school?

I didn't see what the candidates said, but I hope that helps!

And very fine playing by the way. 8)

Because...he doesn't understand why students have to pay so much money for school when there are people out there who have a LOT of money...people who are extremely affluent and really rich and their kids don't have to pay for school, and people like himself, who work really hard for years, come out of college with about 100,000 to 150,000 dollars in student loans. He'd like to know how the candidates could help the students.

I thought you might have a hard time understanding the dialogue with the poor microphone.

If that's not the most blatant example of class envy you've ever seen, I'm amazed.

For sure, my hyperbole was showing. But I still can't believe what I heard in that clip...I'm not that old, but I can't imagine anyone in my generation talking like that. C'est la vie, I suppose...

Mike,

You are an excellent player. Not based on the Wagner, but on the RVW Concerto on your Myspace page. I've read your biography, and you already have too many degrees. Why worry about candidates' promises for better higher education funding? If you are subbing with the PSO and other pro orchestras, what you need is an ironclad commitment to the practice room, and you will soon have a gig. If I were in your shoes, I would go full throttle for the DC military bands. More degrees at this point will not help you. Continue to study with Craig Knox (if you are) or begin to, and live with your tuner/metronome/tape recorder. This is the path. Not more degrees/diplomas.

I'm not sure of your age, but isn't the young man in the clip about 2 generations after hippies? My point is that we, as a society, have been walking down this path for the last 50 years and each generation seems to act like they never saw it comming. Yet, these are our children and grandchildren.

My parents generation removed corporal punishment from schools. The next set started passing out condoms. The next set seems to think that they should be friends with their kids. Now, check out MTV....

As adults we have also been following this same trend in our own behavior. It used to be God and Country....help your fellow man. Sacrifice for the greater good. Now it's "I got mine, you get yours". A guy makes 3.7 billion dollars in one year and no one asks this question: Why wasn't more of that money returned to the stock holders? If that same guy bet wrong, there would be government bailouts, sticking the taxpayer with the bill. It is the world we live in today.

You are correct, as long as men of good conscience continue to remain silent whilst the walls tumble about us.

I, for one, intend to continue speaking out against such filth whenever and wherever I see it, PM or public flames notwithstanding.

So, when confronted with differing opinions on the role of government in regard to funding education, you pull your post and cry "I didn't want to be judged"? If you put yourself up for display, you're going to get comments...both positive and negative. Deal with it.

I take it you didn't receive the opinions you had hoped for.

Not surprising...the tuba playing is well done and "neat" to your average Joe. The point of view is right in line with most material aired regularly on CNN. Congrats on the exposure!

That's why I made the suggestion.
so one should either be six figures in debt as they begin their professional career, or go to war in another country to obtain an education?
Yes!

BTW, that's what soldiers do... And you probably wouldn't want the convenience of going to War in your own Country. Being in the Army Band doesn't exclude you from War and the education you receive is payment for the possible dirty work you must perform... If the thought of fighting a War, combat & living a soldiers life in another Country bothers you then you shouldn't join the Army...

You should however, pay thought the nose for your education and then spend the rest of your life complaining about the failed system...

Simple, Tim

This thread is based on the assumption that you HAVE to spend $100,000 plus for a decent education. Why do some assume this?

There are less expensive choices.

Therefore, being $100,000 in debt is a CHOICE. You have to consider this an investment. It might pay off. It might not.

I highly doubt the world "needs" more tuba players. (It needs even fewer euphonium players) Do not expect the government, or anyone else, to invest in your education as a tubist. The world has TONS more issues to deal with than getting a few more tuba players out there.

These are facts, not my opinion. Trust me, I have no delusions about my own value to society. It is minimal at best.

Well,

I wouldn't say the world doesn't need ANY tuba players, but it certainly doesn't need ANY MORE.

It would take an empirical study to be sure, but I am betting, in a given year, there are more "qualified" tubists and euphers "produced" than there are new jobs available.

As an undergrad, I chose to go to a state school where I got a scholarship. Very inexpensive for me. I then drove 70 miles twice a month (to Duquesne, where I never would have gotten a scholarship) to study privately with an amazing teacher. I highly recommend this route if the geography allows.

I don't need a study to tell you the ratio is well above 10:1.
