scalping a lawn

In the South there is a tradition of burning a bermuda lawn each spring before the green shoots come in to promote lush growth. Because of the enviromental impact and local burning laws this practice has largely been relegated to rural areas. In the city it has been replaced by the practice of mowing the lawn for the first time in the Spring very, very close, ie: scalping it. I haven't scalped my bermuda lawn, but wonder if I should. Hortoculturists among us speak up.
