I stopped for lunch once in Deer, Arkansas. And in a VERY small one-horse town on in far eastern Arizona on I-40. Neither of these towns could have been more different than the urban east-coast cities I'm used to.

My first roommate was from Deer, Arkansas. He might as well have been from a different country we were so different culturally. I loved it.

My short list:

Devalls Bluff, Arkansas- Craigs BBQ, the "pie shack" which is actually an old bike shack. This town hasn't changed the slightest bit in years.

Wa Wa, Ontario- Home of whinny the poo (or the live bear the store is based off of).

Oh, that's funny! My brother and I drove cross country and had stayed the night in Little Rock (culture shock already!). We wanted to drive though a bit of the Ozarks and ended up getting lost, and this was the only town we could find to have lunch. What a different world!

Last week we had a delightful lunch at Kenya's Restaurant in Dierks, AR. It's a sawmill town on US 70, east of DeQueen. I love small towns off the beaten path. One of these days, I'll retire to one and get the hell out of the rat race here in the Metroplex.

About the only thing Deer and Dierks have in common is the fact that I killed my first deer at age 13 about 14 miles due north of Dierks and my last some 30 years ago 14 miles west of Deer. Dierks has about 2000 inhabitants and Deer maybe 20. I do miss that place though, God's country, unless of course you are trying to make a living in an industry that requires a concentration of people or playing tuba. In that case there's not much opportunity in the Land of Opportunity. I do miss it though.
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

That's no way to talk about a lady.

P.S. One way to tell if your dinner date is a real dog.
The waiter shows up with your plates of food and puts hers on the floor.
We pronounce it Guf Coast
