A gift certificate to a nice restaurant in the area is always nice. And I'm thinking of a local establishment that's known for a "special dinner" evening, not a chain, although some chain restaurants are nice.

Whatever you do, don't get any apple-shaped knick-knacks. My parents were both teachers, and every year they would bring home several apple-shaped things.

I'm not and will never be a member of the TNFJ, so maybe I shouldn't be responding.
I recommend a slight paradigm shift. Don't think "What should I get him?"
Instead think, "What could I GIVE him?"
I treasure above all the hundreds (thousands?) of things I have received from students during the past 36 years a handful of handwritten notes letting me know that I have made a diffefence; especially those that come long after my contact with a student is over.
I recommend: Let this teacher know how you are a different person because of him. Then, over the course of the coming years, continue to find ways to show that his influence is still being felt in your life, and communicate this to him. This will mean more than any "thing" you can find.
If that is too much trouble------ chocolate!

Single malt scotch. Of course.
