He conducts like one of my band directors from high school. That is not a compliment.

When I was in high school, we would do the usual series of summer lawn concerts on the town square. We usually had a "guest" conductor for a song at each of the concerts. You know -- like the mayor, or a visiting civic guest, etc. Our director would always have them conduct one of the more straightforward marches, like a Karl King march, and before the "guest" was brought up to the podium would point his baton at the bass drum player, remind him or her to keep the beat absolutely steady, and have the band keep to the bass drum regardless of what the "guest" conductor did.

Since our high school band director was Navy music school, I'm sure the Marine band was prepared in a similar fashion.
