I have been listening to several recordings of Barber's Agnus Dei (Adagio for Strings) and also Ase's Death from the Peer Gynt Suite, both of which are extremely moving. What are your favorite pieces like this?

Rachmanniov Symphony No. 2 and the second movement of Tchaikovsky Symphony No.2 are two which never fail to move me.

Adagio for Strings-Samuel Barber.
First heard the ASU (Arizona) chamber Orchestra play it in 1998.
Changed my view of strings!

Just to re-prove my tuba nerdiness, i'll throw in Pat Sheridan's Ave Maria(Bach/Gounod) and Sotto Voce's version of "The Lord's Prayer". Nice stuff...

I love that one too. Who cares if it's overdone. Sleep is another great one, and I like the choral version just as well as the concert band version. I've played both of those. Really nice tuba parts.

A Flower for Teresa by Edmund Siennicki. I am not sure if it is even in print or if it ever was. just a great piece by a really nice composer.

2nd Mvt. of Symphony No. 5 -- Tchaikovsky
Offertory from Requiem -- Verdi
2nd Mvt. of Symphony No. 2 -- Vaughan Williams
2nd Mvt. of Symphony No 9 -- Dvorak
and the part of Beethoven's 9th when the chorus sings:
Brüder, über'm Sternenzelt
Muß ein lieber Vater wohnen.
Ihr stürzt nieder, Millionen?
Ahnest du den Schöpfer, Welt?
Such' ihn über'm Sternenzelt!
Über Sternen muß er wohnen.
I guess they're all "standards" but they really hit the mark.
Doug "what is it about those second movements?"

"The Lord's Prayer" from "The Book of Mormon", a cantata by a Mormon composer (LeRoy Robertson, maybe???) Not performed often, and it's been 20+ years, but the thought of it still makes my breath faint.

Not to be a smartass or anything, but it's actually a hymn called "I Vow to Thee, My Country". Very cool hymn.

1st movement, John Mackey's "Kingfishers Catch Fire," just gorgeous. 2nd movement, epic, powerful, moving, and probably the most incredible piece of music I've ever played. Watch it here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZz92Xho-fk" target="_blank for the one I'm in, or apparently (this is new) Texas All-State has a video of it now on youtube as well. Regardless, it's magical.
Whitacre's "Lux Auruque" is my favorite of his, personally.

Maurice Durufle's Ubi Caritas et Amor belongs on the pretty piece list
http://t-recs.net/mpegs/misc/ubi_caritas.wma
If you have never listened to Linda Eder
http://t-recs.net/mpegs/misc/look_your_eyes.wma
She takes a worn out tune and shines it up.
http://t-recs.net/mpegs/misc/troubled_water.wma
It doesn't fit the category, but I like it
