What's Good?

Post by John Caves »

I am going to start playing bass guitar in our church's Praise Choir, but I need a bass. I an earlier life, I had a nice Fender Precision (w/Anvil case), but, like an idiot, I sold it. Budget is $100-150. I know this will be akin to finding a Hirshbunner for $2k but, this is what I have for this venture. Does anyone have any brand recommedations, new or used. I have found a new "Johnson" bass that has a feeling similar to my P Bass for $120.

I've used a Yamaha ERB070 for years and found it to be a good all-around bass. Nothing fancy, but it has a good tone and works well for straight-ahead jazz to rock to slap/funk. Right in your price range all over the web, and you can usually find them in the guitar shops as well.

I have the Rogue 5 string passive bass that I've been using for the past 5 years and have been very happy with it. Been using for the church praise and worship and couldn't be happier. Can be had from Musicians Friend for around your stated budget.

Thanks for all of your ideas. So far the Johnson is the leader, but I still have to check out Guitar Center. Even though we recieved our Econcomic Stimulas dollars today, I think the "Johnson" might be the ticket.

In that price range, also consider "SX" aka Essex basses.

FWIW, if you could up your budget to $300-$500 you may be more satisfied with what you can get.
ALSO, be sure to set aside some money for a good setup and a real set of strings. And a top quality cable.
The Hartke Bass Attack is probably the best under-$100 add-on you can use that will make even a mediocre bass sound great, it also includes a direct box function to plug directly into a house system.
