In a metro area of well over a million, none of the gun stores have the ammo I need for my rifle:
6mm
80gr
soft point (optional)
Git yerself one of those Lee-loader thingies and save your brass. The price (and availability) of 'plinking' ammo for many of the 'fun' center-fires is EXACTLY the reason why I gave up my 9mm parabellum and Enfield 303 a few years back.

Whoops...sorry, Joe. I didn't look carefully enough. Didn't mean to waste your time.
FWIW, I just "bite the bullet"

and buy mine at Walmart.

As long as we're talking guns, if I were to break down and get a handgun (haven't done so, so far, cuz I was told long ago by a cop friend that the most likely use of a gun in the house is for the house owner to be shot with it by someone who broke into the house) purely for self protection, what should I get?
I have shot handguns before and am not a klutz with them. Biggest I ever shot was a 45 revolver and it had too much kick; it hurt my right elbow, which won't lock straight. I've been told a 38 has enough stopping power, and that I should get a revolver, but not being a klutz I'm not sure a semi-auto is out of the question.
I don't carry a purse so it doesn't need to fit into one, like, that cute lil snub-nosed 22 is not really what I'm looking for. I'm looking for something that will take care of the high-on-meth dude who still comes in the house even though he set off the burglar alarm. I'm also well aware that if I display a gun I'd better be 110% ready to pull the trigger.

If you live where you have to worry about a meth-head invading your house while you're in it - MOVE.
Seriously, unless you're going to carry your firearm all the time inside your own home what make you think you're going to have time to go get it if you need it? Who wants to live like that anyway? Having to walk around armed inside your own home is not a good feeling. Who wants to feel like they're under siege all the time?
If you enjoy shooting and want a firearm or two to indulge in that, then by all means do so. You don't need to justify it. But, if you are genuinely afraid to be in your own home without one, then it's time to move.
