So, what do you fine, distinguished people of TubeNet feel about dual enrollment programs in secondary school?

I can sum up my thoughts about dual enrollment programs (except in extremely unusual circumstances) in three words:

I'm going into my senior year of high school. While there is no dual-enrollment program (that I know of) in New York, I could have easily graduated high school in three years. A couple of my friends actually did at the end of this year. I can't agree with Todd more. Why hurry into it? If you are worried about the college credit, AP classes can take care of up to 30 credit hours at most colleges.

I'm sure dual-enrollment would look great when you apply for college... if you're into that sort of thing.

The way the dual enrollment program around here works is that students are required to takes college classes world a certain minimum of credits (It slips me), so, by graduation, a good deal required college classes (Assuming the correct classes were taken in dual enrollment) would already be done with.

And all the high school classes (Just the core classes) are AP.

Well, James, I see that you learned a lot in that English class. I guess it was especially helpful to have did those papers. Maybe I should consider going back to school and taking an English class. Even though I done already did that, I'm sure I could learn a lot more.

Wow, James...calling Ray Grim, a regular and very helpful contributor to TubeNet, a jerk isn't going to earn you any points around here. I suspect he meant his post mostly as a joke. I'll say what he said in jest with all seriousness.

Ray's absolutely correct. When you claim English was an "easy A" and display such poor writing skills, one of two things must be true, logically:

1. You don't care enough to use proper English skills in your posts (making them easier to read), or
2. You don't really have a very good grasp of those skills, meaning your "easy A" speaks to the piss-poor level of current education in this country.

Surely you understand that if you're going to misspell words at the rate you do, use incorrect grammar at the rate that you do, and make other errors like incorrect punctuation and capitalization at the rate that you do, it's going to be difficult to claim expertise in English skills with any credibility.

But that's my opinion...I could just be another TubeNet jerk.

Thanks, Todd. You've nailed it. I was trying to be funny, and at the same time point out the disparity between James' claim to English class superiority and what we usually read from him on TubeNet. I rarely, if ever, actually flame or attack people on TubeNet. I guess it has happened, but it is not my usual intent. You have stated more clearly than I, what I intended in my earlier post.

In the absence of spellcheck, why not try something really old-fashioned? Try reading your own posts. From what I hear from Wade, it sounds like it is a necessary step for him. Despite the difficulties he has told us he has, his posts are almost always well-written and informative. Yes, he is a very smart guy. Is he smarter than you? I don't know the answer. I don't actually know you. I can only go by what I read in your posts. Do you wish to be taken more seriously? Present yourself that way.

We all know that TubeNet is not the same as writing a scholarly paper. It encourages a very informal style of writing. Despite this important difference, one must still be able to communicate clearly. This means one should use mostly proper grammar and spell words well enough to be understood clearly.

Another part of this subject involves what one claims in the quest for credibility. If I claim to know everything there is to know about the tuba, then I better be certain everything I post about the tuba is accurate. Otherwise, people will not believe I have such knowledge. If I claim to be an A student in English, people expect me to demonstrate that. Yes, even on TubeNet this is important. If I don't demonstrate the ability, my ability will be questioned. You will notice that not everyone on TubeNet demonstrates good writing skills. As long as they are able to communicate their ideas, most people don't care. If they claim to be experts in grammar and they don't show it, there is a problem.

Lastly, James: I am not trying to show you up. You don't need to get on the defensive. I attempt to treat you in a similar manner to the general behavior of TubeNet. If we claim knowledge or expertise, we better deliver. You might notice that when Roger Lewis, Rick Denney, Wade Rackley, and others like them, post on TubeNet, they are received respectfully. This is true due to their record on posting well-articulated posts with accurate information. They are occasionally challenged by people with differing ideas, but they don't have to contend with the reactions you do. They have credibility. This trait has to be earned. I believe you are earnest and sincere. These are good traits. You are probably a very fine young tuba player. You have ambition. All of this is good. I would just be more careful about what claims you make. When we make claims, people expect to see some reason to believe our claims. This is why I make very few claims. I don't want to fall short. Keep posting. You'll learn more, just as I have. Learning is one of my main reasons for being on TubeNet. I read lots. I post some. I try to have fun. And James, I hope I get to meet you sometime. You seem to have passion for playing tuba. I like that very much.

What's the hurry?

Most students here do the Dual enrollment for financial reasons. Taking the college classes while still in high school is about 30% of the cost than if you took it in college. I myself am taking several college courses through FLCC (Finger Lakes Community College) through their Gemini program next year. I have also taken several AP classes.

At my school, if you want to take certain classes, like Business administration, Business law, Accounting, Public speaking or advance Biology you have to take it through the local community college.

Ah, I completely forgot about the financial part! At the program I'm attending, all my college classes are free of charge (except maybe the band class that I'm taking outside of the program).

Mine aren't free of charge, but I pay about $42 a credit hour. I do get a scholarship however that pays for a bit of it.
