I was glad to see the price reduction. Here however, it is still in the $4.00 range, but a little bit out of town it is creeping down below the $4 mark.

I have a week of College Visiting coming up in 2 weeks, hopefully the prices will keep going down so it is slightly more feasible to go.

Gasoline isn't a big deal to me since it is only about 3 to 4 miles to work, and the small truck gets about 25 mpg. On average, I use about one gallon per day. But, the cost to heat and cool the house is something else. It's a big, old house. When I first got it, utilities were no big deal. But they are getting to be a big deal. About $250 in the coldest part of winter to keep the place about 58F. And this month's electric was $175 to keep the place in the mid 80's F. And the hottest days just are now moving in.

With the move from Colorado to North Dakota my gas prices went down significantly. It was $3.96 when I left on Monday in the moving van and $3.59 when I filled up the car today. Quite happy about that.

I just finished a grand road-trip with my daughter - gas prices ranged from a low of $3.77 in Georgia to a high of $5.11 in California. On the Outer Banks of NC, they steadily increased as distance from the mainland increased (no surprise there), and back home in Vermont prices are around $3.95. Good thing my 1990 Volvo (240 - standard transmission) got an average of 33 mpg,eh?

I haven't owned a car in over a year, and I'm actually not riding the bus anymore. My bicycle is supremely uncomfortable, but I'm starting to like not getting a $20 pass every week. AND, it's keeping me away from expensive bars that I never enjoy anyways.

Now that I'm here I'll be riding the bike as much as possible to save on the gas. I live on campus, have a GTA position in the music dept. so that takes care of the job, but unfortunately the grocery store and Walmart/Target are not within biking distance if I have a full load of stuff. The plan right now is to only drive the car to the store about once a week. Hopefully I can stick to that

The other positive, I get to ride the city bus for free with my student ID so I'll be able to help out on gas there when winter sets in.

I paid $4.59 for diesel Friday 2 blocks from the house. Two weeks ago, the same store had it for $4.89. I fill up every other week with about half a tank. I mostly drive the truck to & from work - 4 miles each way. I take my lunch to work 4 days a week, which saves fuel (and lunch) money.

Here is a neat link. Plug in a zip and it gives you all the station's prices in the zip ranked low to high and locates them on the map for you so you can decide whether it's worth the trip to go out of your way to fill up. I'm going to use it on a trip next week. I'll decide ahead of time about where I need to stop for gas, do my research ahead of time and save some bucks.

$3.439 just about everywhere here, but I'll pay the extra for ethanol-free at Valero...$3.529 there.

Funny how people around here are all saying how great the "low prices" are now. One year ago, the same people were bitching non-stop about gas going over $3 a gallon.

I agree with you on many levels. I think the proliferation of trains and the reduction of highway vehicles (both freight and personal transport) would be good for:

1. Congestion
2. Road wear (I still say cars do jack to roads... 60,000 lb rigs tear em up)
3. Environment (less fuel per pound per mile)
4. Fuel use (less fuel per pound per mile)


But, if it were economically "viable," wouldn't producing companies be sending their goods by freight train already? Why aren't they? Is maintenance $$$ such a problem with rail (unsubsidized) compared to road (tax money)?? If freight trains are something like 3 times more fuel efficient than 18 wheelers (plus a whole lot less manpower), why are they still so much more expensive?

I just looked up an Amtrak from my home station to NYC. $75 a person--CHEAPEST FARE. That would be $150 for my wife and I round trip. It cost us about $50 in gas to drive our Corolla there, plus tolls (which are substantial, but certainly WAY less than $150)...

Why are trains so expensive??

If I were to take the commuter train (Virginia Railway Express) plus the Metro in to work, I would spend MORE (about $11 a day) than I would driving!! Why??

On vacation in Maine this week. Gasoline prices were hovering around $3.79 when I left Newburgh, Indiana on 10/1. After reading reports of fuel shortages in the hometown paper before I left, I'm quite pleased to fine that fuel is plentiful on the coast of Maine and prices are around $3.32.
