Hmmm...a horn player with an ego the size of a trumpet player (or a conductor?). You're right...that is slightly disturbing.

The second clip just made my *** bleed. The really sad part is that guy is obviously a very talented player...but what an unmitigated ***.

Somebody tell tubashaman about this one:

The 5 octave range???

Check out some (okay, one, if you can spare the time) of his other videos...particularly the Mozart concerto in a concert setting. He's pretty good when he's not being an ***...he's no Farkas, but he's pretty good.

To me, that's what makes the other ego-stroking ridiculous stuff so sad. I've known several students with all kinds of potential, but they just can't get past the ego stuff. I attribute a lot of it to people around them who tell them how great they are all the time, with no basis in the reality of the competition that's out there. Being the biggest fish in Farmer Brown's little pond gets you nowhere in life.

Ah...good ol Flo'...how come so many college musicology professors think she's so dang funny?

I think this is really it. The most egotistical players I know are the ones that constantly get the praise from the directors and students. It gets to the point where, in the director's mind (which is no secret to rest of the ensemble(s)), it is (star player) and "the band". Like you said, the really sad thing is that many of these individuals are indeed very talented. The "If only they were..." thoughts race back and forth all the time.

I have had my share of praise by various people, but I think I have learned to graciously accept their praise, and (in the practice room), step out of my body and look at what's going on. I don't see an gift from the clouds nor do I see a hopeless POS. I see a guy who is makes progress only if he puts work into it. These "superheroes" that I interact with actually help me because I see them and see how others work with them and I remember all these little interactions to evaluate myself when I think I've become "beyond practicing". Like I mentioned in another thread, I'd much rather recieve suggestions/critism than praise, but, over all, I would prefer something that follows the "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" rule.

(Yes, I have heard someone seriously claim that they are beyond practicing.)

I think some of my fellows take things in our world of high school-level music WAY WAY WAY too corporeally. There are so many iterations and reiterations of "We can't do this" or "We don't have the time for this" or "She can't do this because blah blah blah". This ties into the extremely competitive mindset. I understand practicality and such, but most of the time, these people set there own boundaries for what they can or can't do before they even start.

“Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.”

A bit off topic to the one at hand, but if you have not seen Frank Lloyd play an unaccompanied version of Tocatta and Fugue in d minor you are missing out:

Technically and musically great!

How else can one explain the egregious sharpness with the attitude?
well, his hand is NOT in the bell, which does raise pitch a bit...

not that I'm allowing any excuses.

He is quite obviously a(n)...

1. Alcoholic.

2. Youtube maniac.

3. Noodler/hacker

He appears to be intoxicated or noodling in each of his videos. I wouldn't want anyone to judge my playing by my noodling (and if I still drank, my drunkeness), but then again, few of us are dumb enough to post it all over youtube. Maybe the italian/mediterranean sense of humor is hard to read on these videos, but they do not look serious at all.

A certain tubenet poster is quite guilty of posting his noodling all over youtube :tuba: , but I do not think he is a worse player for it, because I know how good of a player he really is.

Again, I have nothing to gain by defending this guy, nor do I have a "horse in this race." But the above statement is just inaccurate. While I agree that the videos he has posted of himself noodling around are ridiculous, the ones in a concert setting are pretty good. Look at these:

if you don't believe me. Of course, you can always look at the choice of "tags" to see what a pompous *** the guy must be.

I doubt he's drunk in most of them but he may very well be in these two:

All in all I think he's just having fun playing his musical instrument

The guy does have promise, but unless he quits playing while driving on la autostrada, he might not last long enough to find a teacher who will rein him in.

If anything, you could say I was defending him, in a round about sort of way.
But the above statement is just inaccurate.

This may be a stretch. Considering the videos, other than the ones he records himself with his minirecorder, are so horrible it is hard to tell if it is the same guy at all. I only take the ones into consideration that genuinely look like the same guy. We could take his word that it is him, but this is also the same guy that labels it as pornography.
While I agree that the videos he has posted of himself noodling around are ridiculous, the ones in a concert setting are pretty good.
Indeed the noodling is ridiculous and doesn't tell us much, hence why I take it with little seriousness and don't think it should be overanalyzed and criticized.
Of course, you can always look at the choice of "tags" to see what a pompous *** the guy must be.
This "pron" tagging technique is commonplace on youtube. It is done to get more hits and is done on all sorts of videos on youtube.

The little italian I can understand, makes it sound like the "goofy" videos are in fact requests from youtube members. In the bed one he thanks the people that watch his videos for their "vision".

Yeah...guilty as charged. :D

I do think it's the same guy, but please watch the last half of the third linked "good" video. I've never seen somebody try the last movement of the Strauss that fast. He literally leaves the poor pianist (on a electric piano, no less) in the dust. The poor bastard actually drops the last page on the ground and a woman walks out of the audience on stage, in front of the soloist, and helps the pianist get his music together. Priceless.

That was hilarious when the pianist was trying to play the end of the Strauss that fast and was turning his own pages. Sounded like some notes were missing in there that were supposed to come from the piano :D

I just played this accompaniment for a horn student here last semester. It's not that hard and fairly straight forward, but it is "busy." At the tempo attempted in the video, it would be difficult to get all the off-beat figures in...so yes, there was a lot missing from the piano part in that clip.
