It's been MUCH longer than that for me. I've bowled perhaps twice since my college days (30+ years ago). In those days, I used what was then a soft ball--a 16-pound Columbia Yellow Dot--and rolled about a 12-board right-handed hook on a fresh lane. But I never played enough to get really consistent. I was, however, subject to unexplained and unrepeatable fits of brilliance, and my high score (247) is MUCH higher than was my average (150-160). It was fun, but I don't really have time for it any more.

Playing in a league is, of course, the only way to bowl. The lanes are usually the texture of sandpaper on open-bowling nights, and often I had a hard time keeping the ball on the lane unless I started all the way over to the left and rolled over the third arrow instead of my usual second.

Whew! With an average like that, you must have been quite competitive in those scratch tournaments. I've seen successful pros in that range.

Wow Ken...a 205 average is something I would love to achieve, but that's a long term goal for me. A very long term goal... :-P

After I decided to join a league, and settled on one, I started looking into new equipment. My current ball is about 10+ years old, and is urethane. I was shocked at how much has changed about bowling in the 8-9 years I've been away.

The reactive resin bowling balls I remember all the really great bowlers around having are now what *everyone* uses. Apparently, bowling ball technology has improved so dramatically in the past 10-15 years that higher scores are becoming more and more common. If you think the tuba gear discussions get crazy, you should check out some of the bowling forums I've been looking at for the past week or two. Crazy. There are so many different balls, meant for so many different things...heavy oil, light oil, medium heavy, medium light, early movement, late movement...it's making it really hard for me to figure out what I need.

And to think, once I finally make a decision....laquer or silver???

You knew the hat joke would come up...I'm just surprised it took until the seventh post.

I like to bowl, but haven't been for at least 15 years...I would give you a reason, but I can't think of any good ones. Maybe I'll take the kids (6 and 7 years old) there tomorrow. Thanks for the idea.

Ok...but I'm telling Steve that he's on your "foe" list.

See, Steve posted a picture of a hat...a "bowler" hat. Then he said...

Aw, shucks...I guess I could just quote it...

Like I said, I'm surprised it took as many posts as it did...particularly considering the room.

I searched desperately for a picture of a tuba player wearing a bowler, but to no avail.
