So my sister moved to the Dallas area in August and is wanting to explore the area. She will be off of work for a few days and was asking if I knew of anywhere cool to go. Having never been to Dallas (other than the airport) I don't know of anywhere, but figured the TNFJ could help us out.

She is a Nurse Practioner and likes medical type of things, but is game for just about any place or anything. I imagine something that is do-able to and from in a day or two would be best.

The JFK museum at the former Texas Schoolbook Depository building is amazing, and somber at the same time.

There is construction on Dealey Plaza now, but across the street, The Old Red Courthouse is now a museum with a lot of Dallas County history. Also, at Fair Park, you might want to check out the Museum of Natural History & the Aquarium. Here is a link to the Myerson Center organ recital schedule (free)

If you can't get to Cabela's, there's a Bass Pro on the north side of DFW Airport. It's not the same, but it'll do for an outdoor "toy" store fix. It's close enough to my job to be able to spend part of my lunch hour there occasionally.

They're supposed to be putting a Cabela's in the Meadowlands, as part of this massive "Xanadu" entertainment complex they're building next to Giant's Stadium (and the new football stadium, also being built). The place is a total eyesore...


It's nearly complete now, and I can assure you, it's even uglier in person. As cool as some of the shops going in there seem, I don't know if I can bring myself to frequent that monstrosity (with the first indoor ski slope in North America. Seriously. WTF???).

It's not just the Cabela's, sorry if I didn't make that clear. It's an "entertainment center" with a ski slope, performance venue, restaurants, and shops, one of which is a Cabela's. That rendering is close to what it looks like, but I could not find a real picture that truly does its ugliness justice.

The Cabela's in NW Fort Worth is really cool. If you get bored on the inside(which I dont know how that's possible) you can go outside and get buzzed by F-18's. Least that is what happened to me the last time I was there....

Waxahachie - cool courthouse on the square (look for the faces carved in the stone work) and many restored Victorian (gingerbread) homes.

I went to grad school in Fort Worth at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

If you want an exciting trip, do it right....

Start out with a 1979 Chevrolet Impala station wagon without air condtioning. Begin the trip about August 1. Have your family with you... a wife in her late 20s and two daughters, a preschooler and a toddler... Make sure to have an ice chest well stocked with sandwiches and drinks (of course, the sandwiches will eventually get soaked and the ice will get warm).

Your destination is Corpus Christi. Actually you don't know where you're going. You're supposed to meet someone at a gas station in San Antonio. Unfortunately, you never meet. By this time, the toddler in the child seat is crying. The crayons you brought for the older girl are now melting from the heat and getting all over the place.

Well, you were expecting to get to Corpus about 6:00 pm. You had to splurge your budget on Whataburger and get to your destination about four hours late.

Then you have to drive back a week later...

The San Marcos "Aquarena Center" is pretty cool with one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in North America. They still do glass bottom boat tours of the hot water lake and have nature exhibits. It's too bad they stopped the underwater mermaid drama show.

San Antonio is always a good destination for fun and frolic.

You could drive to Goldthwaite and see the road my dad was born on the side of.

Or if one is really seeking excitement, one could watch the grass grow alongside the road, this January. Now that, would be totally enriching!
