I think Tubenet has become just like any other organization (a church, the PTO at your local school, a drum and bugle corps, etc.). There are usually just a handfull of interested parties who do all the work, or in this case, contribute, and the rest just kind of watch and step in when to mood suits them, and usually just step back out. Me? It's much more fun to contribute.

For me, it's time. I spend maybe 20-25 minutes a day on here reading what everyone else writes. Now and again, I'll chime in. But if I replied as much as I'd sometimes like to, I just wouldn't have enough time for it...just a thought...

I suspect that the 1st and 7th poll options will be the most popular (TubeNet is located on Truthiness Ave., right?)...

There are many people who have no or very few reservations about clicking that time bomb that is the Submit button, but there are probably just as many who are the opposite and fear a witch hunt-like backlash from this relatively small community (Have you seen the internet mouths on these trumpet players?!) It's very clear to see people who are the former (...obv).

man, im just playin the tuba......

Honest Abe said it best, "Tis better to be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt".

Seriously, for me, it's been roughly 15 years since I've tooted on a horn. Obviously the passion still exists even though the finances do not. As such, I lurk here to learn, read, and keep in touch with the goings-on within the tuba playing community. Someday, hopefully soon, I'll be in a position to make the purchase and join the ranks of oooom-pah land again. Until then...

I didn't vote, because I think I post frequently enough to not qualify as an avid reader who seldom posts, but I am certainly more reserved on this forum than I am on my motorcycle forum (1500+ posts)...I've been riding a motorcycle longer than I've played the tuba and I'm better at riding the motorcycle than I am at playing the tuba. That said, I have learned more about playing the tuba from reading this forum than I have learned about riding a motorcycle from pashnit.com (home of my mc forum).

I find a lot of the posts here interesting. I duck the hyper religious/hyper conservative conversations, enjoy reading about bloke's (or is it Mrs. bloke's) chicken coop, find it curious that some people have chosen to leave the forum for a variety of reasons, like that the composers post stuff to listen to, roll my eyes when someone wants an e-mail scan of a piece, practice my 12-step mouthpiece addiction mantras, miss some folks (doc and Chuck G come to mind), wonder about others (tubashaman), realize that one (ljdalen) is a college classmate of mine, have had a tremendous "ah-ha" moment regarding my dyslexia from one of the elephant's posts and generally enjoy a daily dose of tubenet.

There is no (9) None of the above.
Truthiness be told, I can't read. That's why I depend on people to tell me my opinion.

I think there are probably a lot more folks involved here than meets the eye. Most folks seem content to just read the posts and glean what information they want. Some folks post so much I find it difficult to understand how they even have time for anything else. I guess I could respond to EVERY post just to keep things moving along but I prefer to post only when I think I have something to add to the thread that might be of interest to someone else.

I read TubeNet to know what's happening in the world of the tuba (e.g., hearing about the latest new equipment, auditions, who took what position, is there a good CC or big F for sale in my price range, etc...). While I find the word "stupid" is a bit harsh, many of the threads are pretty inconsequential to the goings-on in my world. However, when topics (mainly in the off-topic forum) arise that I have expertise or opinions on (e.g., Bloke's transporting fish thread of a few years ago or the cycling in traffic thread a few months ago), I like to post. The threads that deal with musicality questions, entry into graduate schools (of which I have opinions, just not musical opinions), or other questions (e.g., is this phrase right, what about this excerpt, what microphone should I use), I tend to stay away from.

Please do not tempt the TNFJ into making a political comment. Sean has forbidden such.

I post only when I think I can add anything, but I read a lot. Somewhere, have I missed something about doc? I remember that he was hit by the hurricane and going to be off tubenet for awhile, but I haven't seen him around since. What is the story? I sure do miss him! 8)

I have tried to speak up in the past, but I find that mean elephant always flames my efforts.

Now, I mostly just stalk. Wait. Lurk. I'll get that SOB one day when he least expects it!

I've been reading posting here for several years....since I was a senior in high school, on the old TubeNet. I go through spells where I post a lot, and periods where I post nothing for weeks. It depends on whether there is a topic interesting enough to me to illicit a response, and whether I have time to post. The more free time I have, the more frequently I post. I may not have thousands of posts, but I do my part, and feel like I make a mostly positive contribution around here.

I admire Bloke's efforts to draw us out. I'm a fan of his.
Doc used to draw me out and into trouble. I miss him.
I am more mouthy since I got old but Tinker's post represents the way I really should go.
I am very comfortable with all you guys and I hope you never go away.

Don't worry about tubashaman. He's still with us, but has chosen to fly under the radar just in case a snooty instructor is searching TubeNet to read his posts.
I am still lurking around and not posting (so watch what you post). I am avidily emailing pros and tuba buds about stuff so I don't have to post on here and cause an uproar. Tubenet is a great resource, especially for the amazing Pokorny recital and information about the new horns and new music.

No, it's as I said in another thread:

It's a remarkable lack of self-awareness. James walked off with his tail between his legs and now is telling us to "watch what we post" because he's lurking in the shadows. Yet, he can't be bothered to figure out why he causes an uproar when he posts. Even when people outright tell him. That kinda says it all.

Fie on thee....
