The wife of a friend of mine is looking for a practice mute for her husband to use in his Conn 88H trombone. Any suggestions?

How about Jo-Ral mutes? Or do they have a practice mute?

Best Brass Practice Mute.

Hornguys (Steve Ferguson) has them as do other vendors.

Expensive but works very well and the horn can be placed in the case with the mute.

I took a look at the 'Best Brass' practice mute at Dillons website. They list one for tenor trombone and one for bass trombone. Although I fix trombones, I know nothing about the terminology. Which one would be appropriate for an 88H?

Tenor would be for an 88H. the Bass would be too big I think

I know nothing about a practice mute, but an 88H is considered a tenor. There are really 3 practical sizes for Bb trombones, small tenor, big tenor and bass. The 88H is a big tenor. It really takes 3 mute sizes to properly fit them.

I would suggest that as it's a post about brass instruments, it's not really that far off topic at all. maybe not enough for the off topic forum, which tends towards bad jokes, gas prices, and folderol.

I would consider it off topic because it doesn't pertain to Tubas or Euphoniums. Granted, quite a few of the people here can play tuba/euphonium and trombone, but still....

Thanks. But I think my customer zeroed in on the Denis Wick 5527.... about the same price as the Bremner mute but highly recommended by several trombone players. The DW mute was also available locally and in time for Christmas.

WOW! The person who did that study certainly had lots of time on his hands! It's quite interesting that there was no real conclusion. Different strokes for different folks.

I hope it is not too late, but I would second the vote for the Denis Wick practice mute. Mr. Wick played a Conn 88H and I think the mute works great for trombone. Since I also play bass bone, I actually have a DW bass bone practice mute but it works in my Benge 190 (tenor) which has a similar sized bell to the 88H. But I am sure the tenor mute would would well also.

The great thing I like about the DW practice mute is that it responds throughout the entire range of the trombone from low trigger register up to the high register.

Another nice option but more pricey is the Yamaha Silent Brass.

Unfortunately, I have not played other brands so I can not make comparisons.

Anyone try the Balu trombone mute? Obviously it is not a practice mute... but since we are on a tuba site talking about trombones... Maybe I am just that stupid like what's his face said.
