Too young for tuba?

I asked my sister if she would mind if I gave her (almost) 5 month old son a "tuba" for christmas. She said she'd love it. So I gave him an alto horn I got for free from a band director. Then I figured why not give my other alto horn to his dad (who doesn't play brass instruments but really likes to play them) so they can jam together. So I gave them 2 good condition alto horns. 1 Holton Collegiate and one Reynolds Contempora. The little guy really liked it and he was able to get some type of noise out of the bell!
The guy in the purple "Low Brass: Where the Self-Esteem is as low as the notes" shirt is me.

That's kinda fun! I would suppose he could be playing for real by the age of five or so.

What a great gift -- well done!
As regards "too young for tuba", that's like "too young for breathing" -- once you've inhaled and gotten the oxygen from the air, it has to go somewhere, and I can't think of a better way for it to exit than through a tuba ...

My son loves his alto horn (he plays lots of pedal tones). Lately he has been infatuated with trombone. Since he is much too small for a tenor, he got a cheap eBay alto trombone for Christmas. I was a little disappointed with slide, but then I thought; after a year with a six year old, any slide will be disappointing. I'll let you know how it all turns out.
