I haven't messed with this stuff for a long time, so I have forgotten most of the details. But, I vaguely recall times when you had to specify things like frame rate and characteristics of the audio track to make things sync up. Maybe the software has gotten smarter now. Download the trial version; you can use* it something like 5 times. Then delete and download again, if needed. I copied** most of my DVD library to a big external hard drive using this.

*By "use" I mean "open." As long as you don't close it you can rip as many DVDs as you want. Thanks to the standby/hibernate feature on Windows, I only had to open it ~3 times to tip 50 or so movies. Meaning I've not had to re-download it yet.

**"Copy" means just that. The file that's ripped will play on your computer's DVD software. It is NOT a compressed mpeg movie. It is like having the DVD, just loaded from a hard drive. If you're looking to just have a library on your computer, this is the way to go. If you want video for your iPod, this probably won't help.

Well, heck. Maybe I should actually read the sites I link to. This program WILL copy to other formats. I just never did.

Seriously, though, unless you want to use iTunes or some portable device, you can't go wrong with copying an uncompressed file. Should avoid any errors like dropped final-seconds or out-of-sync sound.

To what format? If it's just "I wanna rip them to my hard drive", then use just DVD Decrypter. Unluckly, the format it puts it in takes up a lot of hard drive space. If you want it in a different format, then it gets a little more complex. I like them in .mp4, since I like them on my iPod. For that I use Videora iPod Converter.Videora iPod Converter. And both of these are completely free. Only thing is that Videora has ads on it to pay for itself (just like how this site does).
If you want it in a different format than .IFO or .mp4, then you might be on your own for a different converter.
