I'm heading off tomorrow morning to the University of Arkansas for the MTNA Regional Competition where I'll be accompanying a trombone student in the artist division. Tubenetters from U of A...is there anything going on in town this weekend that's a "must-see"? I haven't been to Fayetteville for many years...what is there to do around town?

Thanks for any info, and if you're in town I'd love to meet any of you guys that hang around on the forum!

It is expensive, but you will not regret.

Get a steak on Dickson at "Doe's Eat Place". Don't question it, just go there, get it and savor your 2+ pounds of THE BEST STEAK YOU HAVE EVER HAD. Get tamales for an appetizer.

If you go there and don't like it, i'll send you $10 in the mail, seriously, it is that good.

That's an excellent idea, Ken. A bit late (and kind of rude, to me) to ask for a lesson on such short notice, but I hope to meet Dr. Pierce for possible lessons in the future (if/when an audition in the area comes up). It's only a 3 hour drive from here, after all. I'm not really preparing for anything at the moment, nor am I in particularly good playing shape to benefit from such a lesson. Also, I'm traveling with the group (also a trombone quartet who made regionals) and doubt there is room in the vehicle for a tuba.

I do appreciate the suggestion, though...Dr. Pierce is an absolutely phenomenal player. Anyone who hasn't gone to his website (here) needs to do so and listen to the sample clips. Better yet, buy his CDs!

I will do that, Wes, and I will let you know. I seriously doubt your $10 is in jeopardy, considering the always high quality of your recommendations.

Bloke, I used to love that place. But, unfortunately, it changed hands some time ago. My last two visits have made me not wish to ever eat there again.

No, thank you. My brother-in-law is one of the "higher-ups" in that company. He, my sister, and their 3 kids live in a very nice 7-figure home just west of Bentonville.

I know way more about Wal-Mart than I would ever care to...

What! Danny didn't quit on us did he? I hope not. Please tell me the beer rolls are still available. Don't never put one on your head. Your tongue will beat a hole in the roof of your mouth trying to get at it.

Unless the manager, who came and talked to us because our waiter LITERALLY put his hands down his pants and scratched himself IN FRONT OF US at our table, was lying... yes. :(

Maestri's used to be a MECCA for truck drivers, because it was so damned good!

Just got back. Doe's Eat Place...wow. Unbelievable. That steak melts in your mouth, the tamales with chili sauce were awesome, and the highlight was those little bread nuggets.

Thanks for the excellent advice.

According to a newspaper arcticle dated 6/8/08 Danny is still running his mom's (Mary) place. Unless he has changed a bunch since I was there, both the waiter and manager would be gone had he know of such an incident. Great guy but he won't put up that.

Yep...I was in the music building the better part of that day and evening. Unfortunately, there wasn't room to take a tuba or we could have played some duets.

As a recap...both the fine bass trombone player I accompanied and the trombone quartet were awarded alternates (second place) in their respective competitions. The chamber music competition was won by a sax quartet from North Texas (again). Sax quartets seem to have an advantage in this format...look at the previous MTNA chamber music national finalists if you don't believe me. The Young Artist Brass winner was a euphonium student of Ben Pierce from U of A...I didn't hear much of him outside the door waiting to perform, but what I did hear was outstanding. Dr. Pierce is building a nationally recognized studio there (heads up, tuba and euphonium seniors!).

It was a fun trip, and thanks again to those who recommended Doe's Eat Place. I'll remember that meal for a long time.

I don't think so (as I didn't see any tuba players in the halls), but were you playing excerpts in Dr. Pierce's office towards the end of that time? I heard a tuba player playing some in there...I was across the hall rehearsing with trombones in a classroom and we left for the hotel around 3:30-3:45. I heard some Prokofiev 5 and Meistersinger in there as we were leaving.
