The Edison discs (and cylinders) used a vertical motion recording system- the Gramophone system patented by Emile Berliner uses a side-to-side motion that is sill used today...

I still have a Dual 1019 that I bought in 1968 while in the service. It's been on a closet shelf now for about 15 yrs. Can't bring myself to getting rid of it.

NEVER thought I'd see this... the first Victrola in bloke's post is an EXACT match to one at my parents' house that's been in the family since it was new in 19whatever, purchased by my great grandmother.

And the DUAL in the post by Rick is an EXACT match to the phonograph they have in the living room.

I've never seen a match to either, and to see them in one place!!

What're the chances?!?

By the way, that Victrola really puts out a respectable amount of sound, and isn't too bad with a fresh needle, and the Dual still sounds great.

This Columbia Grafonola was in an old farm house in VT when we moved in many years (and many houses) ago. Previous owner must have upgraded their hi-fi and not wanted it. Oh well. Came with hundreds of extra needles in the little cups on top, and dozens of neat old records in the cabinet underneath. Some of them blue, many of them one-sided. My mother taught me to polka listening to those records on this neat old machine. It's a conversation piece now, sometimes a shelf for mouthpieces. My boy loves hiding things in the louvred "speaker" cabinet.

I have a Dual 1229Q (hard to believe that it was the top-of-the-line multi-disk player at the time) with its heavy 12" platter that is comatose. I should give it up for dead (after all, it's 37 years old--that's arguably 105 years old in electronics with moving parts years) and buy a USB turntable. I've got about 10,000 LPs, at least 10% of which were never issued on CD.

[Now watch--someone will offer me a lot of money for my 1229Q...]
