Here are a few that have annoyed me recently:

"Somewhere Over the Rainbow" just heard it too many times. New versions of this song are not interesting to me, even with ukulele...

"Amazing Grace" Yes, I know it's a standard at funerals. If the deceased could speak, they'd probably ask for something less cliche.

Any, I repeat, any version of "Caravan" (this includes snippets/references/quotes worked into other jazz tunes/solos/riffs). Just plain old played out, dust off some other Ellington, for god's sake.

Bolero - it gets on my nerves!

I have a Music Director that believes every POPS concert should have at least 3 - 4 Carmen Dragon arrangements. Although, I will still admit that his arrangement of America is very good, I am totally burned out on Carmen Dragon.

Specifically referring to "Rainbow"...yes, I'm tired of bad versions of it.

The local NPR station had a show with Rob Kapilow, he dissected the Mendlessohn Octet, AND Over the Rainbow.

Interesting. He describes it as nearly perfection.

Everything searches for that perfection of the tonic. But the world is contracting...every circle and yearn is a little closer to the reality of daily life.

then it repeats. still looking.

then the bridge... almost a dream sequence. The first phrase of the bridge, doesn't repeat, it goes higher, ends with the highest note of the piece.

Then the A section again. but, as a Coda...
the orchestra plays the bridge, and Dorothy thinks about the future.
it starts off like the bridge, but then it's suddenly different...and ends up back at the Ultimate Where. She makes it from Kansas to Oz, finally arriving on the last note.

I don't know if Mr Arlen actually had that type of analytical approach in mind, but it sure helped me appreciate the song more.

It also is better with the verse. A LOT better.

The music from Carousel. I don"t think that there is any music that can bore me to death as bad as this does. Even worse to play because when your playing it, it's a lot harder to run from it.

I always consider it a good Christmas season when I can make it to January without hearing Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.
