Tunes we never need to hear again...

Here are a few that have annoyed me recently:

"Somewhere Over the Rainbow" just heard it too many times. New versions of this song are not interesting to me, even with ukulele...

"Amazing Grace" Yes, I know it's a standard at funerals. If the deceased could speak, they'd probably ask for something less cliche.

Any, I repeat, any version of "Caravan" (this includes snippets/references/quotes worked into other jazz tunes/solos/riffs). Just plain old played out, dust off some other Ellington, for god's sake.

How about you?

(This is just a gripe thread, not a musical debate. If you like these songs, then keep enjoying them and tell us about the ones you don't.)

Eric

Mack the Knife (this tune desperately needs a "B" section!)

To all my friends and compatriots who may have served in Korea, there was nothing worse than getting roused out of a Soju induced stupor than by the:

GARBAGE SONG

Chuck"if you haven't heard it, count your blessings"Jackson

I actually have a copy of the music for a cut-down band if anyone wants to torture the odd neighbor/relative/passing aquaintance

I have a Music Director that believes every POPS concert should have at least 3 - 4 Carmen Dragon arrangements. Although, I will still admit that his arrangement of America is very good, I am totally burned out on Carmen Dragon.

Actually, I kinda want to try to set a world record for playing that...longest time playing it ever (we'd just repeat and repeat and repeat and repeat, etc)

Specifically referring to "Rainbow"...yes, I'm tired of bad versions of it.

The local NPR station had a show with Rob Kapilow, he dissected the Mendlessohn Octet, AND Over the Rainbow.

Interesting. He describes it as nearly perfection.

some--(the daily reality...Kansas) WHERE---the high note. (octaves, actually) Searching for that ultimate goal, where we want to get to.
O (7th of the tonic)ver the (circles around the central idea) Rain (yearn for)BOW(back to that ultimate)
way UP (6th of the Tonic) HIGH (5th...almost the ultimate)(harmonies...lush)
there's A (4th) land that I've heard OF (4th)
ONCE (2nd) in a lullaBY (tonic)

Everything searches for that perfection of the tonic. But the world is contracting...every circle and yearn is a little closer to the reality of daily life.

then it repeats. still looking.

then the bridge... almost a dream sequence. The first phrase of the bridge, doesn't repeat, it goes higher, ends with the highest note of the piece.

Then the A section again. but, as a Coda...
the orchestra plays the bridge, and Dorothy thinks about the future.
it starts off like the bridge, but then it's suddenly different...and ends up back at the Ultimate Where. She makes it from Kansas to Oz, finally arriving on the last note.

http://www.kcur.org/UTDarchive.html" target="_blank" target="_blank 12/5/2008 the analysis starts about 14 minutes in...can't rewind or ff in WMP, but it's interesting all the way through.

I don't know if Mr Arlen actually had that type of analytical approach in mind, but it sure helped me appreciate the song more.

It also is better with the verse. A LOT better.

in an elephant room, yes. In an orchestra, what an amazing rush to play that! It's been years, but I still remember the feeling.

"Tip-Toe Through the Tulips - Tiny Tim

For that matter, anything sung by Tiny Tim. "

Have you heard the CD Brave Combo did with Tiny Tim just before he died?

That might change your mind about that. (He used falsetto VERY sparingly)

The music from Carousel. I don"t think that there is any music that can bore me to death as bad as this does. Even worse to play because when your playing it, it's a lot harder to run from it.

I always consider it a good Christmas season when I can make it to January without hearing Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.
