Advanced Search

I've been seeing a lot of suggestions to use the site's search engine lately.
While I do feel it can effectively answer many questions, it (in select cases) is obnoxious; not that I'd exect anything else from the TubeNet population.
I don't recall the day Tubenet stopped being a discussion board and became an encyclopedia.
I'm not defending the superfluous amounts of 'does this horn play gud' or 'wuts rong with my tuba'. My experiences with the search feature have lead to many facepalms and 'invalid search terms'

So...

ITT: we shall discuss searching, and like it
because I was too lazy to search for an old thread about searching.

Noel ' who would rather have nice answers than search through piles of 'USE THE SEARCH BUTTON' and threads having nothing to do with my search' a fat tuba player

I think that every time I see the reply "use the search button". TubeNet is, or should be a discussion forum! Even if a subject has come up many times before, a new snippet of information may come out this time around from someone's recent experiences. Anyone not interested, does not have to even open the thread.

If this site's search facility is useful for anything more than the simplest searches, I hope someone will point me to instructions.

That doesn't mean you can't search the site, though, it just means you should think about using someone else's search engine. With Google, for example, just constrain the search to the domain forums.chisham.com, at the bottom of their advanced search form. Then you can search for the (almost) exact phrase "Conn 2" for example, which I believe is a good example of something that this site can't do. The down side is, it searches all the "signature" junk, so if people start listing their mouthpieces in their signatures, Google won't be much use finding stuff about a Conn 2 either.

I didn't realize there were any threads on this board that don't meet that criteria. :?
