Driving from NYC to Detroit

A question for you road-trippers out there...
Next month, I'll be driving round trip from NYC to Detroit. Which route is better?
1) South -- across PA, through Cleveland, to Toledo, and then north
OR
2) North -- across NY state, to Buffalo, then across Canada to Windsor, then into the USA.
We won't have a ton of extra time for stops, but I sure wouldn't want to drive 10 hours straight either.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

I can't imagine any reason to want to cross the border twice if I didn't have to.

oops, I wasn't thinking. Make that 4 times for the round trip.
That make driving through Cleveland even more attractive. (if you could call it that)

I live in Buffalo, NY. The last time I traveled to Michigan I went through Canada. I had absolutely no trouble at the border crossing any of the 4 times I did so. Cutting through Canada also saved me a good chunk of time and mileage (around 100 miles and 1.5 hours). The only consideration I would take into account is the time of day you cross the border. At rush our the borders tend to get backed up. Also the QEW 401/403 split near Hamilton heading towards Toronto can get backed up, although I have only ever encountered a serious delay once.
Anytime I have to travel to Michigan in the future, I will be certain to travel through Canada again. Let me know if I can offer any further assistance.

Thanks, guys!!
Come to think of it, I'll probably only be driving back (from Detroit to NYC) through Canada. Leaving Detroit around noon on a Sunday, and crossing back into the US at 4:00 PM that afternoon?
One question -- I'll have a lot of unopened, wrapped gifts in the car. Will the border guards not like that? (i.e., is it like airport security?)
