Good, affordable computer speakers?

Can any of you recommend a particular model, brand for my laptop, that I use as a desktop? Something smallish and non-AC powered (USB or fits in headphone jack) is preferred. Decent reproduction of notes in the *TUBA* range with overall good balance is the goal here.

Thanks,
Eric

Would you consider this affordable?

I think they are probably bigger than you want, but better computer speakers do not exist. :)

You had me reaching for my check book for a minute there. Then I read the specs and discovered that they are A/C powered. I too am looking for something this good but USB powered.

Just buy a set of Logitech usb powered speakers. I have always liked the stuff they make.

USB 2.0 can supply power up to 1/2 amp (500 ma) only. So you cannot expect to power very big speakers on USB power alone.

I'm really just looking for a step or two up from the tinny sounding, built-in speakers, but those Klipsches look tempting. Hmm, I see they require a "Line out" output, rather than headphone output. My laptop has only headphone and mic plug-ins.

(I can never hear or read "Klipsch" without thinking of the "Klipschorn", formerly[?] the Rolls Royce of speakers. Been out of the audio game for about 15 years after my good, middle-of-the-road [Denon, Sony, Acoustic Research], separate component stereo system was stolen. Used the renter's insurance settlement as the down payment on my first house, and never replaced the stereo.)

I guess having to plug in to AC power ain't so bad, considering I have my laptop plugged in most of the time anyway, since it is really a desktop replacement. So removing the USB-only requirement, any specific recommendations under, preferably well under, $100? And also, I have no "Line out" output.

Thanks,
Eric "discovering the limitations of the 'laptop as desktop replacement/substitute' setup" L.

As someone who gets to hear the various computer speakers daily (Work at Best Buy), the Klipsch computer speakers are INCREDIBLE. I'm actually getting some next month.

On many computers, a "line out" or a "headphone" output have about the same level, on the order of half a volt for loud signals. Problem is, the tech manuals often don't specify the level exactly. On others, the "line out" is about 0.3 volts. The volume control on the loudspeaker should be able to cut the level by that much easily. If not, a simple resistor divider network would do the trick.

By the way, I still have a pair of Klipsch "Heresy" speakers (not on the computer) which have been going strong for over 20 years, lasting much longer than any other speaker I had. They make good stuff.

I've used these for several years now...they cost about $100 when new. Sound output is pretty good, all things considered. I've gotten my moneys worth out of them (or, rather, my parents' moneys worth...they gave them to me for Christmas.)

Go for logitech. Get their 5.1 system at walmart or sams or something, usually pretty cheap there. Theyre really loud, and they sound pretty good.
