Yes, that is quite a bit...

Bet they sell a lot of 'em though...

I know someone who, for about a six month period, made $1500/mo selling home made switch covers on eBay. Can't remember how much she charged each- something like $10-15- but they really sold until the 'fad' kind of petered out...

You never know....

I was thinking of making and selling covers, but my idea never got past the "hm, that'd be a cool way to make some money" stage and never even got to the "I wonder what I should charge" stage...

It costs so much because, like everything in the modern world, Santa's image is copyrighted...

I think that the $14.73 shipping with 2-3 week delivery is far more outrageous than the $49.95 price.

When I went searching for bell covers, I couldn't decide what was worse; the price or the shipping and handling. A trip or two to the fabric store, some sewing (not by me, but by a very creative friend, and the results:

She made some for the trumpets and flutes as well.

No metal ever involved in the sewing, my slotting is approximate at best, so there was no issue with harmonic convergence.

Jersey cotton is too thick; the reason the tie dye cover had eyes and a mouth was for more better sound to come out. The nylon/spandex worked great, but was more pricey. The "Fruitlands" cover was for Creswell's centenial celebration this August, and was hand drawn from an old picture of the sign that used to grace "Main" street. I had a really thin, gauze r/w/b for the 4th that worked really well, too.

There is quite a bit of time involved in making these...more than I thought. It is fun for a goofy gig, but not something I'd want to make my fortune with .

I've always made mine out of old t-shirts. The sound is not affected, but it always makes my conductors think that i'm playing quieter, which is very nice. They also protect the bell (of my concert horn) so I can put it down and not worry about it getting scratched. Also keeps any idiots from throwing stuff in, if they get the urge.

This looks a little better when I'm in tie-dye, but i'm not complaining

How about this!!

20 bucks for some simple tubing. Then 10 bucks to stuff it in a priority envelope, which will take 2 weeks to get there.

Why would anyone even protect the bell of a "marching baritone"!?

Isn't that edge of the bell supposed to "ring" as part of it resonance ? Wouldn't putting anything the bell like that going to affect the sound?
