You have to get rid of the rappers."

Today my 16 year old daughter told this. Funniest damn thing I ever heard.

You could also say that music is like candy because everyone loves suites...

I too used to think rap was unworthy to be called "music", but as I've explored the genre a bit, I've been impressed by the intricate rhythms utilized and the wordplay and rhyme the artists create.

Sure, there's a lot of terrible examples of rap out there, but I think there are also plenty of quality examples that have at least a few elements that any musician or artist can appreciate. Even in my limited exposure to rap, I have still found elements that have helped me improve as a performer in a completely different genre.

I'm not trying to turn this thread into an overly-serious discussion...just trying to show my appreciation for a different form of music :D

So other than the fact that it is misogynistic, violent and filled with hate, I guess there's nothing wrong with it.
It is no more an art form than crashing two tractors into each other at fifteen miles an hour. "Get rid of the rappers" is right. Yes, this is a no tolerance zone.

I think this is a vast generalization. There are several songs I can think of that are probably the exact opposite of this.

Vitamin C- "Friends Forever"
Puff Daddy- "I'll Be Missing You"
Black Eyed Peas- "Where is the Love?"

There are plenty of bad examples out there, but there are also some good ones out there. I don't listen to much rap (these 3 songs being really the only ones I do), but I know some songs seem to be pointless, and the language can be a bit much. But I think done the right way, it can be an art form.

It is as much an art form as I am the reincarnation of William Bell.

In my opinion, it takes a "special talent" to recognize the art/music in rap. I seem to lack that talent, completely. If some of you have the talent, good for you. Please refrain from joining those talented people in my neighborhood who are so kind as to share their rap with me at all hours of the day or night, at full volume, on their car stereos. Maybe that's how one becomes "talented." Listening at unbelievable volume levels. Hmmm.

Ah yes, because classical music (to include orchestra and band music) is the musical end-all, has so many fans, and is such a thriving industry. :D

Rap fans who dislike classical music= :?: so therefore...
Classical fans who dislike rap music= :?:

When did we lose sight of what's really important here- making fun of euphonium players and denying them musical legitimacy?

Ah! I hadn't heard this particular quote before, but it certainly sounds like something he would say. And if Ken is correct with his dad's statement, that says a lot. For the record, I never said anyone wasn't entitled to like whatever type of music this wished to like. Buuuuuuut, just because a lot of people like something doesn't mean it has a lot of quality. The U.S.A. should REALLY understand this, in light of some of our recent developments. Quality and perceived value can be, and often are, two different things.

As to the music front, Bloke regularly turns our attention toward that basic truth. He has dozens of posts which suggest to aspiring young tuba players that they consider performing a wide variety of types of music. He understands that limiting ourselves to "quality" musical styles/types may curtail our performing, altogether, as there is such little demand for it. I really, really enjoy listening to, and performing in, symphony orchestras, but their mere survival is on the line, due to a lack of demand from the public.

Anway, I have been enjoyed the dialogue in this thread. While I don't particularly like rap music(the word detest seems to pop up, here), it is immensely popular. And, even though I don't understand why it is, it is not my call to make.

It wasn't always like that - check out some of the true "Old School" when the genre first developed.

I am presently living with a fifteen year old male who worships Lil Wayne. It blasts out from the speakers at many different times of day. I am willing to listen to some of the earlier work suggested, however I need some recommendations. Feel free to offer your suggestions.

The worst of rap I think. I still suggest the music I listed earlier.

Now this thread is boring me. It is time to follow the centuries old tradition of the Inuit people of northern Canada and put it on an ice floe and send it out to sea. Goodbye!
