I just bought a new HP and it came with a phone jack and Windows 7...
I'm assuming its for dial up...I don't think phone-through-laptop is very popular yet

They must've dropped the modem recently. My Toshiba 'satellite' is about six months old and it has a conventional phone jack on the back... a cat6 jack on the left side... AND a wireless. Ain't technology wonderful?

Actually, you must order the modem as an accessory... I.E. you have to order the laptop from Toshiba... Sorry. You know ATT has dsl for 20 bucks now.

All laptops we have ordered at work for the last two years have not come with modems. It is either special-order, or not available at all, depending on the model.
Joe - you may want to consider one of those "wireless Internet" cards that is basically a cell phone modem. Looks like a USB memory stick, and you can get (relatively) high speed Internet anywhere you get a cell signal. I think you can get plans about $60 a month. ALl our field reps use them now, after having too many problems trying to connect to hotel "free" wi-fi.

I have one of those for my laptop (for only 10GBP per month as part of mobile phone contract). Useful, but not as good as broadband line. Bandwidth does not seem directly linked with signal strength. I can at times get good mobile signal, but a connection which takes 5 minutes to download emails - mostly when in school holidays. I guess all those kids on their mobiles all day???

The underlined portion may be what is keeping him from pulling the trigger. When I was at his house with my Verizon Blackberry, I had decent reception in his house. I sent bloke a PM back recommending that he at least look into the possibility of a Verizon mobile broadband service that has (this is the kicker) the ability to add an external antenna. I believe the PCMCIA cards have that ability, but the flash-drive-like modems (while adorable) do not. In fact, bloke might (emphasis on "might") be able to get a mobile broadband router that will take the PCMCIA card. This way you can place the router and antenna at the best location in your house for service and the router can provide the connectivity to all wifi computers in your home. I dunno if it is a real possibility, but worth a try.

Wait a second :!: Did you say some months back that you can get cable internet, but that you didn't want to pay for the TV? If that is the case, I would just buckle down and get the TV and internet and enjoy the speed and reliability.

I also use Newegg for most of my tech purchases and don't hesitate to buy Rosewill products that meet my needs. I've only had one 'lemon' and that was a cheap 6' HDMI cable that cost less than $5 with free shipping. I simply discarded it because return shipping would have doubled my cost. I have Rosewill computer cases, power supplies (ONLY with ball bearing fans, not sleeve bearings), internal card readers, wireless N usb adapters, laptop coolers, mice and keyboards, and a KVM switch. I picked up a visually appealing $80 Rosewill cross-cut 11 sheet shredder on Black Friday for $40 with free shipping and I used it for my family exchange Christmas gift. Everyone has documents that should be shredded before they are recycled so I figured whoever got it could use it. My pack-rat brother-in-law didn't seem thrilled to draw it, but my sister seemed to like it and promptly put it in his office.

$60 a month? No thanks. $25 once seems to make a lot more sense to me.

Personal Opinion:

Buy the internal modem sold by the manufacturer for your laptop. It should have been tested and it should work without any fuss. Unless it is radically more expensive, it might be the easiest way to go.
