Are any of your playing any Memorial Day musical venues today. If so tell us about them, especially is any of you are called on to play 'Taps' if the trumpeter failed to show.

Several. I played (Friday) Adagio for Strings and Band of Brothers for my school's Memorial Day Ceremony. With 165 years of history and several thousand students having died in combat, it's a very fulfilling ceremony in which the bell from the USS ROgers Blood ( a former student at my school) is rung as each of the schools fallen's names is read. Great music, and a great way to remember the people who have fought for our sakes.

I played the memorial day parade (held yesterday) in Seabrook, NH.

I played the memorial day parade today in Manchester, NH, and also played at the Memorial day ceremony held by the City of Manchester.

The local Shrine hosts a community band that plays for the observances at a large gazebo/bandstand at our local National Cemetary. Great day. @40 players showed this year, including five tubas. We play an hour concert @ 10:00, then play for the actual service starting at 11:00, including the service anthem for each branch as they post colors, national anthem, other special music as required from year to year, and then a couple of numbers at the end as people leave after the politicians speak, final rifle salute, taps & benediction.

Yesterday: Played at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia, one of the oldest in the city and resting place of countless Civil War-era soldiers, including General George Meade. We played a very moving ceremony at his grave and 2 others, followed by refreshments and a tour of the cemetery [fascinating--if you ever get a chance to visit a very large, old cemetery, do it].
Today: A large regional parade in SE Pa., in the heart of the mushroom country, followed by a nice ceremony at another old cemetery. We were doing exactly what we needed to do this weekend. Awfully hot in 22 oz. wool uniforms, but just right.

Did two Memorial Day Services. Saturday at 10:30 at Rose Hill Cemetery right across the street from my house. The second one was this morning at The Sportscenter in Owensboro, Kentucky. My community band furnished the buglers for the Rose Hill service. At the Owensboro service, they had one of those 'toy' bugles and even had new program that included the echo. Yuck! Oh well... there IS a shortage of buglers and it's the thought that counts... I guess.

My community band plays a Memorial Day concert every year in the bandshell at our downtown park. I actually got to play euphonium this year (I usually have to play trombone)!

My quintet played a service Monday.

Remote trumpet opened with Taps, as he rejoined us, we had already started Amazing Grace.

We followed up with 90 minutes of music, Patriotic, Americana, and "other".

We closed with a five-piece arrangement of Taps.


It's amazing how a simple tune like Taps can tug at your heart ...

I marched in the Chicago parade the Saturday before; on Monday I did a smaller one a bit north of the city.
Decent pic. Oh well... The last/only time I tried to play Taps was in junior high. I don't even touch trumpets anymore (is bass trumpet kosher for that?)!
