In a way that made it look very inexpensive... what would I use?
It needs to be a paint that comes off easily without harming the silver of the horn.

Not sure what kind of paint would come off easily, but it should definitely be red!

Fiberglass sousaphones are the only horns that should be painted--unless you don't care risking the finish of your tuba.
Bite the bullet and pay the declared value--it is not worth risking permanent damage to your instrument.

The irony is that the paint will make it look cheap, but the pitted and scarred silver plating will look even cheaper.
Otherwise, I'm confused. If you shelled out the bucks for a nice tuba, don't go cheap now.

Yes, I was fortunate enough to have the funds to buy a tremendously expensive tuba, AND pay tax on it.
However, that tax is something that can be deducted! Heck.. the tuba itself is a deduction!
Better to be honest, and use the system in place than risk damage to said tuba and risk getting caught.

Well, assuming that I'm the buyer and not the seller was wrong.
Either way, I told the potential buyer this morning that I would not meet his requests.
