I was actually looking for an interesting picture to put in my most recent Off Topic post, but this headline was too good to pass up. (Who knew there was an area of Palestine called Tubas???)

When I bought my Soviet Army Eb tuba in a Music store in Vladivostok, Siberia for 10,000 Rubles ($10 U.S.) they had no case or valve oil to sell me. They stuffed my new tuba in a blue canvas sack and handed it to me.
Alaska Airlines told me to check it and I did and the bell got rumpled on a flight to Anchorage, Alaska. I got on a plane to Juneau, Alaska with the tuba in it's sack and was trying to stuff it between the last rear seat and the back wall when the flight attendant came up and told me I had to check it. I told her this airline badly damaged my poor tuba but it was still playable and I was going to get it home with no more dents. The pilot heard our exchange and told me he would stow my tuba in his locker for me and that I was to come around to the front door forward of the wing when we landed and he would hand it down to me. I did and that's when the airline security lady ran up to me and threw a hissy fit. She just knew that tuba was full of drugs or explosives or SOMETHING.
I had no valve oil but put the mouthpiece in and bugled a bit for her enough to convince her I played.
We got on a small cruise ship to Seattle and the tuba barely fit under my bunk in our tiny stateroom. Fellow passengers asked me why I brought a tuba with me. I replied, "It's like a hammer. When you need one, nothing else will quite do."
I got a hundred dollars worth of laughs out of that ten dollar tuba before I even got it home.

I had my mouthpieces and tuba stand in a carry-on bag when I went to MS for Fall Break last year, and on my return flight I was stopped by security and asked to take out all of the items. They took the small tote my stuff was in and asked me to come off to the side so I wouldn't impede the flow of people. The guy took the tuba stand, took a swab and rubbed it on the metal (it is a BBC stand) and tested it right there. He stand he needed to take precautionary measures because they didn't know what it was...okay then haha.
