I'm wanting to get a tonneau cover for the truck so I can protect stuff from the snow and rain but am new to this type of product. For those of you that have/or have had them what do you reccomend or what should I stay away from when looking at these?

If you are going with a soft cover, stay away from any of the cheap stuff that has metal snaps to hold the cover down. These will rust, and pull apart very quickly. If you have a lock on your tailgate, then you should consider a hard cover. It will be more expensive up front, but they hold up a lot better over time. A.R.E. and Lund are the two companies that I would start with.

on the last 5 trucks I have owned. They are water tight, theft resistant, and roll up out of the way when you need to carry something big. You can stand on them and work if you are not too big. I also install an electric tailgate lock so when I lock the doors, the gate locks, too. Hard top covers are a hassle to deal with if you often use your truck as a truck.

While I agree with you it comes down to $'s and a few hundred is a lot more approachable than $1500+ for the topper

I would avoid the metal snap based covers, I had one on my old truck. the snaps tend to wear out and break, and during the winter months the top becomes very tight in reaction to the cold, which makes getting it re-snapped a pain in the ***, leading to further snap damage as well.
