Steve Kunzer has been very nice to ask me to conduct TubaChristmas here in Las Vegas. I got a question:
Is it wrong for an ex-tuba player to give other tuba players the hand?

As a conductor, your job is to get the best out of the ensemble. This includes balance. You're in charge. It's your responsibility. If you gotta give a guy the hand, you just gotta. The guy who directs one of the regional community bands where I live is a trumpet player as well as being a retired school band director. Do you think he feels awkward giving the hand to the trumpet section in rehearsal? Not at all.

A gig's a gig. Besides, the guys in town here are a pretty cool lot, so it will be fun.

What venue in Vegas is holding Tuba Christmas? And if we could have our 'drothers where would the most 'awesome' place be to play in Vegas??
- The beach at Mandalay Bay?
- The watery set of Cirque's "O" at the Bellagio?
- On competing vessels in the Pirate show at Treasure Island?
- In gondolas at the Venetian mall?
Some fun thinking about that ... wouldn't want to scare the tourists away, though.
