just saw this article http://www.computerworld.com/developmen ... 54,00.html, it made me wonder what browser my fellow tubenetters use. At work, I'm a Firefox user, have been for a long time. When at home I use Safari on my iBook. If you wish, tell us why you choose to use the browser you use.

I used IE for a long time cuz I didn't really know there were other viable options. I first tried Mozilla and was really impressed at how much faster it was than IE. Also, once I got used to browsing with tabs, there was no going back. Now Firefox is so much faster than any other PC option. I have no problems with compatibility. Whenever I end up using a computer with IE on it I get frustrated cuz it just feels clunky and boring. I think that anyone who gives a browser aside from IE a fair chance will make the change.

That's on PCs. There is nothing that compares with Safari on Mac. Period.

Started out with Lynx, then moved to NCSA Mosaic, Netscape, IE, Opera, Mozilla and now Firefox. I keep IE around for those web sites that say "Sorry, you must use IE for our web site". Opera's not bad, and at first the mouse guestures were kind of neat, then they simply got to be annoying.

It's been so long since I used IE that I had to check just now to see if I had deleted it.

I tried Firefox, and while it's really good, I just couldn't quite navigate its tabs, windows, and text fields as nicely as I can on Safari. I also didn't want to go through the hassle of adding plugins and modifications just to make it work the way I thought it should.

So far, Safari is the one that stays in my dock.

I use IE for most things. Many of the web pages I use in my work (timesheet system, expense report system, company phone book, etc.) use pop-ups and require IE. But I disabled ActiveX and use the Java Runtime Server instead.

If I'm venturing to sites where I'm not sure of the security, I use Firefox. But I usually use IE for Tubenet, because that's what's most convenient.

I use The Bat! for email, which avoids using the IE engine for displaying previews, and thus avoids the biggest security issue with IE and Outlook. It also doesn't resolve external links, which prevents an email from hijacking your computer, and it has an excellent Bayesian spam filter.

Tabbed browsing is a GODSEND for forums, news collection sites, and such. I can scroll down a section's topics (or a New Posts selection), command-click on every one that I want to read, and then just switch between tabs to read them all. I've sometimes had thirty or forty tabs per window (and usually between five and eight browser windows); the same thing would be a horrible mess with multiple windows.

Opera and IE

I've not had the problems of firefox being crashy. I use it occasionally on my iBook only because I prefer Safari. When I do use Firefox it's very stable. Are you using version 1.0? There's also the Camino version which is apparently more optimized for Mac, but I haven't tried it. Not that I'm trying to get you away from Safari, I'm just curious.

Started with Mosaic back in 92. Use lynx for a long time as text only over telnet sessions. Netscape from the 1.0 days through 4.x versions. Started with Mozilla in the M16 days, when it was first usable.

Still use Mozilla (1.8a4 right now) mostly. I like it better than Firefox and Thunderbird.

Only use IE for work when required, and that's not often.

I use IE for two reasons:

1. It is all that I know

2. I don't know any better
