if you're using Internet Explorer, try using a different browser. My preference is Firefox, available for free here: http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox
blocks popups, has tabbed browsing, way faster, more secure.

Agreed -- STOP USING INTERNET EXPLORER.

It's rubbish, it's crap, it's a waste.

Keep using Spybot to clean adware off of your HD, but above all, stop using IE. Its security holes are too easily exploited, and Microsoft just doesn't seem to care. After all, they want to keep all those Microsoft Certified technicians and antivirus companies with fat wallets.

I was using Opera almost exclusively for awhile because it had a quick enable/disable pop-up feature right from the browser. I found it to be the most effective thing so far in combatting pop-ups.

Actually, what is even more annoying for me than the popups are the animated gifs that take over your screen and prevent you from doing *anything* until they disappear. Opera actually has a feature to can those too.

Whatever program you're using, I would recommend something that can deal with popups AND disable animated gifs.

I'd second the vote for Firefox. You'll have to visit some very, very nasty sites to get popups at all. Report those, and in the next update these will be gone as well....
Ad the fact that you can install a small plug-in to block furter ads, and you're surfing 99% commercial free!

Have you had any problems with website compatibility and FireFox? That was my big complaint about Opera -- For some sites, I'd go to a site and click on the buttons and they wouldn't do anything for some reason.

Occasionally there is a problem when a site is designed for Internet Explorer only and/or uses ActiveX*. (Which basically means the site doesn't follow the standards agreed upon) Luckily they're becoming less and less.

*ActiveX is one of the main reasons why IE has so many security/malware problems. Not being able to use it is therefore a good thing!

Agreed on ActiveX. The thing needs to just go away.

Alt-F4 is a keyboard shortcut to close the active (top) window... it's pretty useful just in general... as well as being a quick way to rid yourself of any annoying pop ups that may appear.

I agree that Firefox is a nice browser. The browser's tabs are a nice feature too.
