I was on the sidelines waiting to march on when they dropped their pants in 1970. We didn't think it was funny, we didn't think it wasn't. They had already irritated us enough with their horrible playing and indignant attitude that we just wanted them to go back to the left coast as soon as possible in a cloud of smoke. That smoke sure smelled funny.

I teach at Stanford and several of my students play/have played with the band. I don't see what the big deal is.

Dan, are you sure that clip isn't the folks lined up for admission tickets to the Old Dam Community Band concert?

We usually charge $50 for admission. But... on THAT day, it was free!

This isn't entirely accurate. Neither the Stanford or VT bands played at halftime, so it wasn't like Stanford was being singled out. Last year's seemingly-innocuous marching duo of Iowa and Georgia Tech didn't march at halftime either, so I would guess this is just Orange Bowl custom. As for the Stanford Band...I'm a USC student and I much prefer the LSJUMB to the Spirit of Troy.

Of course in order to embrace this kind of marching band product we would have to fling our musical integtrity right out the door.

Agreed with Bloke 100%. You don't eat donuts for the nutritional value. Sometimes its ok to play in a group because it's goofy and fun. I'd march in a band like that way before I'd even consider a snooty drum corps-style band that takes itself too seriously.

I got by with first post but I guess I got a bit too cocky with the second. I was really going to enjoy a hugh "Gotcha" but you saw right through me.

I marched at Oklahoma from 04 to 07 - the orange bowl never lets the bands have halftime. In 05 against USC, our halftime entertainment was Ashlee Simpson (sp?) fresh off her lip-synching scandal. We still take credit for starting the booing that lasted the entire show.

I wholeheartedly agree with Joe and TMurphy. Way too many oversized wannabe drum corps marching bands doing the SAME arrangements of the SAME music over and over again (whatever happened to ORIGINALITY??). My alma mater (Univ of Houston) has a brass a caption head as band director--so that band is stuck with performing variations of old corps shows and modified arrangements from corps charts (YAAAWWWNNN).
As for the Orange Bowl--I would be interested to know what was the rationale behind replacing marching bands performing at halftime with 3rd rate untalented pop stars lip-syncing the entire show. They should be reminded that is a COLLEGE FOOTBALL GAME and halftime should not be used as vehicle for mediocre wannabes.

Russia re-educates just as we re-educate our English students who are studying Mark Twains' Work. Who will be censored next------William Faulkner, Robert Penn Warren, Flannery O'Connor, Bloke, Brown Mule, Roy Acuff ??????

I particularly liked the percussionist that was playing the kitchen sink.
