.............ask that when you hire a so called professional singer to sing our National Athem at the Super Bowl and you pay the stupid woman a couple hundred thousand dollars to do so that you get her a copy of the lyrics so she doesn't **** it up in front of a couple hundred thousand people in the stands and the million or so people watching at home on their tvs ?

Funny aside... was listening to a morning radio show, and they were played Whitney Houston's national anthem rendition as "the standard to compare to"... and near the end, one of the hosts was like "man, that's some good tuba playing in there!"

So that's another problem with last night. No tuba!

Seems to me that all of the folks who have screwed up The National Anthem had something to gain by being controversial... ie... Roseann Barr, Jimi Hendrix, etc, etc.

Having someone with a voice like Jim Neighbors sing it just isn't sensational enough.

When self-centered Divas sing the SSB it becomes all about them showing their vocal prowess and not honoring America. Improvising is not appropriate when singing the SSB.

Event promoters should get a clue and have the crowd sing the SSB with an instrumental accompaniment. This has always been the tradition at Husker FB games. When you can sing it well with the rest of the crowd it makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. When I heard the Super Bowl fiasco I just hung my head in shame. She was butchering it anyway before and after she flubbed the lyrics. :x

The SSB stands nobly as written. It doesn't fare well when it's hacked up by solo performers. Just my $.02 worth.

Hey, at least she didn't grab her crotch and spit (like some other FAIL performance... ) :)

I'm with you on that. Just sing the damn song. Honor our country. Then play football. Enough of all the extra cr*p.

I changed the channel before she started. I knew what would happen and didn't want to hear it.

Whitney Houston's version annoys me more than most, because it's in 4/4 time. Blech.

The best version, IMHO, is the one with the combined academy choirs and the USA herald trumpets. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ETrr-XHBjE Absolutely beautiful singing and what a wonderful way to honor those who were to be the future of our military. Let these cadets do it and give them the trip to the Super Bowl.

Agreed! A great way to do it.

The SSB reveals the truth: either you can sing it or you CAN NOT. Marilyn Horne and Robert Merrill set the standard by which all others are judged. VERY VERY few have met that standard and Christina Aguilera NEVER WILL.

I think that worrying about the national anthem at a gaudy display such as the Superbowl is like worrying about the paint job on a car that has no doors, tires, or an engine. It's not a big deal. I love my country and don't care about some person sings the song on TV.

It IS a big deal! Americans are not the only one who watch the Super Bowl. To have an American butcher the song of the USA is an embarrassment. I'm pretty sure other countries do not put up wannabe "artists" to sing their song on such a platform without knowing they'll nail it.

Unless it is closed captioned in most of the world, I don't think they will notice that the words were butchered.

Let's see: People complain when singers lip sync it to perfect recordings, and people complain when live singers mess it up. Since even folks singing it straight that are not famous mess it up, there's no winning this one.... it happens. I'm with bloke: Go back to wind bands playing the music and let the crowd butcher the lyrics. Now that's an American tradition we can all live with.

When in the past 50 years or so did the term "diva" devolve to include the likes of Aguilera, Houston, Carey, Beyonce etc.? When I was a lot younger Joan Sutherland, Maria Callas, Beverly Sills et al. were respectfully and correctly labelled "diva". .... Nostalgia isn't what is used to be.
