U of PITT

My son just graduated from HS last week and will be attending Pitt in the fall. One thing i thought was strange is that they do not have a concert band or wind ensemble at Pitt. They have an orchestra and a jazz ensemble. They have a marching band for the football games and a pep band for basketball both of which are funded strictly through the athletic dept i beleive; but they do not have any concert band. My son is a trombone player and is not really interested in committing the amount of time it would take to be in the marching band but would probably join a concert band if they had one, but they do not have one.

Anyone out in the Pittsburgh area know of a local community type band he could play in? He is an average to slightly above average HS level player.

We are driving out to Pittsburgh Sunday evening for orientation monday and tuesday. If anyone is out in the Pitt area wants to get together I would be up for meeting at the Church Brew Works!

Pitt seems like a really great school and I am excited for him to be attending.

Ken,

We lived there for 5 years while my wife attended Pitt. I got back into playing the horn due to all of the opps I had in Pittsburgh. There are 4 amateur concert bands in the area (Google to find them, post back if you can't find the names). I was in the North Hills band, they weren't too bad. That would be close, as would the South Hills band. There is also an high quality amateur brass band (Allegheny Brass band, I think) and other opps. It is a very, very rich place to be a brass player.
