So, yesterday after the big turkey meal we were all stting aroung fat and happy and talking . My nephew started to tell me about this game he plays called Geocaching. https://www.geocaching.com/default.aspx" target="_blank . You located small, hidden contaiers using map coordiantes put into GPS or a smart phone with a GPS and you go hunting. It's like a world wide interent treasure hunt.
When I got home I created an account for myself and then my daughter and I wnet out at 10:00 to find 4 that were in less than 3/4 of a mile of our house. We foudd 3 out of 4 . We are going back out today to find more .

For several years... I had a geocache placed in my 'back forty' by a brother-in-law of my wife. He was really into it. Tom made up some cock-N-bull story that was nautical in theme. The 'cache' was under the bow of an old fiberglass runabout that some jokesters dumped in my yard about 25 years ago. I filled it with dirt and use it for an elevated flower bed/garden.

It was interesting to see folks out there poking around with their gadgets.

If you can identify it... you can have it. (pssst... it's a fiberglass 17 foot Magnolia run-about. Dingy red and white with a broken windshield.)

My kids and I geocache exstensively. Whenever we travel, we try to use fuel/food/potty stops to move around a bit and find a "cache". There are geocaches hidden on every single exit on I-40 from coast to coast. We have found 20 on the local college campus. My little boy can often sniff them out, now, even without the GPS!

It's like a treasure hunt with no treasure or a scavenger hunt where the hunt is the prize.

Have fun!

This is turning out to be a lot of fun and keeps my fat *** off the couch and moving around. I don't have a GPS or a smart phone with GPS on it so I have been searching within a 5 mile radius using Google Earth. I just plug in the coordiantes it flys me to an overhead view. Then I hop in the car to go to the location and start searching.
I suppose I'll eventually have to step up to GPS of some sort. Any thoughts what is the best one for the money ? I've been looking at them and they ain't cheap. I don't see me getting one until way into the next year . $200 to $500 and up is bit much to put out for one of these right now.

We spent the week camping at Northbend Campground on Kerr Lake in Virginia. We did some Geocaching while there . This is my wife and daughter looking in the cache container at the "Tugboat Dan" hide. It was an ammo box hidden under a rotten tree.

So what kind of device did you end up with (assuming you did not "pre-scout" your campsite)?

My wife bought me a Garmin eTrex for Christmas that year. It's a basic GPS but good enough for caching.
