Very sad...sometimes talent is its own worst enemy. RIP Whitney.

*not a commentary on elephant, I love that man, and he's just bringing us the news*
What really saddens me about all this... is that they cut into TV, show news everywhere, talk about it on the radio, etc about Whitney Houston's death BUT,
It took me a full 20 minutes to find out how many Americans died in Afghanistan today. 17, counting contractors.

Many innocent Americans die each day on their native soil.
Nice try, but I don't think this was the substance that led to Whitney Houston's death.

Honestly I feel like an *** to admit it... but I kinda thought she died years ago.
I have a terrible memory for celebrity deaths. All too often I think to myself "I haven't seen _____ in a while," and come to find out they've been gone for years and years. (For example, Ed Bradley, when I was watching 60 Minutes yesterday.) And just the opposite, there are people I thought were gone (like Bob Newhart), who are very much alive and well. I dunno, weird examples, but you get the idea.

I join in the chorus that mourns Whitney Houston's death, but I have mourned her loss for a good length of time. She had thrown her life away in a very real way, a long time ago.

Yes, it is sad indeed.
I hesitate to make a trivial comment in light of such a tragedy, but; this was the first time I ever heard the National Anthem performed in 4/4 time. It sounded great, but felt different. Is it done often?

No intention to slam any particular performer, but here's a different approach to our National Anthem, one which I prefer over pop-culture performances.
I don't think I've ever heard an arrangement of it I like, either way.
We should have stuck with My Country Tis of Thee, or America The Beautiful. Something that can be sung by the commoners.

Ronald Wilson Reagan...??
Yes, please! I'll even take that trashy Lee Greenwood song over SSB.

When a post like this (no offense elephant) stays on the board, it makes me wonder why the post about the passing of Ray Young, a legend in the euphonium world, got moved to some off-topic board. It certainly was a disrespectful choice on someone's part considering this thread.
