1. Reading skills are paramount. Read for at least 6 months before trying to write.

2. Write what you know. If you don't know anything, don't write. See Skill # 1.

3. Know your audience(s). Understand who you are writing for, and how they are likely to react to your writing. See Skill #1.

4. Throw away all throwaway remarks. If it's not crucial to your main thesis, discard it.

5. Don't presume that those who disagree with you simply didn't understand what you said the first time. Repeating yourself doesn't work, and only annoys the pig.

6. Don't feed the trolls. That's what newbies are for.

7. Discuss. Expect others to discuss what you write. Usually not favorably (those who agree with you are busy nodding; those who don't care are busy nodding off.)

8. When you are done, stop.

Someone was kind enough to reply to the original thread today and I only just now read it as I was in the boonies all weekend. This thread is a lot funnier now that I've read the other one!
