My family and I will be in KC this weekend and we're hoping to try some good Kansas City BBQ. Anybody have any suggestions?

I've only been to KC once and only ate at one place but we all loved it so I would suggest the KC Masterpiece restaurant.

Gates and Arthur Bryant's are the two legendary BBQ joints in KC.

Wake up early and go to Oklahoma Joe's about 15 minutes before they open.

Big T's is decent, as is LC's BBQ, and Jack Stack.

Well, sure, for you vinegar eaters.

Pulled pork and/or pulled beef (which they call "brisket" around there) with a thick, ketchupy sauce. Heavenly.

I second the recommendation for Arthur Bryant's. Be sure to go to the original location on Brooklyn. The food is the same at each, but the atmosphere/history is way better at the Brooklyn location.

I've always associated Kansas with "beefsteaks", not any sort of "barbecue".

Fairly regularly, I used to make a trip to Pittsburg, Kansas (near Joplin, Missouri...about two hours straight south of Kansas City). I would ALWAYS visit Jim's Steak House in Pittsburg. I don't even think there is any sort of "barbecue" place in that (college - Kansas State University) town. There ARE three (monumental) fried chicken houses, though: two "Chicken Annie's" and a "Chicken Mary's".
I believe the PSU gorillas are gonna be coming for you, Bloke: http://www.pittstate.edu/

KSU is in Manhattan. I believe you've spent some time in Lawrence, which hosts a university that can't easily be confused with elsewhere.

And which both cause all the trees in the western counties of Missouri to lean west.
(As the strains of, "Fight, Tiger, fight for old Mizzou," fade into the background....)

If you stop in St. Louis, you should try BBQ ASAP.

ah, Bryant's. I do miss it. And, it's a shadow of what it was 30 years ago, before Arthur died. Oh man, that was unbeatable.

Of course, it is a LOT cleaner now.
