Recording levels

It may be much less of a problem for native English speakers, but I have experienced this problem in YouTube videos presenting concerts with spoken introductions as well as with educational videos containing speech as well as playing on loud instruments like brasses:
It appears like the recording level has been set to optimize recording of the music, which after all is very important. The flip side is that especially presenters and teachers with laid-back speaking styles (low compression, lack of edge to their voice) are very very hard to understand.
Quite recently I had to turn the output level of my home theatre on max to get the speaking. Resulting in near disaster, when the playing started. OK, my home is not entirely shattered, but a more even output level still would be very nice.
