My guess would be that it is another way of telling the OP that they have a PM. Not everyone looks up top..... or they don't check their email....or they have a pop up blocker running. I have sent people PMs that I know were on TubeNet several times that day, and never saw the PM.

It's usually in the For Sale section.
It usually means someone is trying to call "dibs" on whatever's being sold.
It is often too late (how many people *actually* sent an actual
private private message?
)

Also, if something is for sale, it is another way to establish your place in the queue with the seller.
