I hear about kids' parents being fined because the kids shared music online. Well, I want to download books to read and can't seem to find out whether what I'm downloading is legal or not. I downloaded a couple from adobe digital editions, and figure those are probably out of copyright, but I found one I want on a different site, http://www.2shared.com" target="_blank, and, well, I can't see that the book I want to download is out of copyright, because it's still for sale all over the place.

Anybody up on this? I'm sensitive to copyright issues and also don't want to break the law.

With books, a lot of classics are in Public Domain, but have new editions that are for sale.

Project Gutenburg is a website that contains digital editions of Public Domain books, manuscripts, and whatnot. If it is listed there, the book is surely PD.
