Car parts

Post by TubaTodd »

A buddy of mine is trying to find some car parts. Perhaps one of you has what he needs. Contact me if you have this...

"I'm looking for a 350 4 bolt main, TH350 trans and a 9" rear if anyone has one. Motor and trans do not have 2 run. Junk yards are out."

I have no idea what this is :)

Craigslist is your friend. It is full of these kinds of things.

Multiple junkyards are "out" of Turbo 350 transmissions AND 9" rear ends?

I'm with Todd.

This is a VERY common engine, transmission, and rear end. Can't believe he can't find a set in your neck of the woods. If that really is the case, he should be able to turn up tons of them online with a little looking. All of these components are available used or as new crate engines and aftermarket parts.

I'd guess he's building a hot rod / high performance car of some sort, yes? The four bolt main request makes me think so. FYI- it means that the main bearing is held in place by four bolts (as opposed to two as on most passenger car applications) and that it can take more horsepower and stress.

Sorry for the delay in my response. Bloke, I received your PM. It's a shame you don't still have it. Todd, my buddy called around to a ton of junk yards and they were indeed all out.

Now I see the problem. "Calling" a junkyard almost never produces a positive result. Going in person, when looking for something as common as a TH350 automatic transmission or 9" rear end, generally works. 4-bolt main small blocks are a bit more rare, but not by much.

Making a phone call just makes it easy for the (generally pretty lazy) person on the phone to say "no."

Besides, ratting around a junk yard is fun! The best way to get stuff out of a wrecking yard is to have a 'trap line' i.e. a list of five or six yards you visit every so often. Joining a hotrod club would help, too. Some club members have so much of that sort of crap that they might even give some of it away.

That said, I have a Jeg's Automotive catalog in front of me with a 350ci/260 HP four bolt motor (minus carb and etc.) for $1695 with free shipping, new from the GM factory. I'm not sure you could duplicate that value and quality rebuilding something yourself.
