DVD ripping?

Is there a simple way to rip DVD's to iTunes so that I can watch my movies while I travel? To my mind, it should be as simple as ripping a CD but apperantly it is not. I have a decent sized movie library, most of which were purchased before digital copy ever existed. I will make sure all future purchase include digital copy but what about my already owned stuff? Thanks.
