+1 to the drinking lots of water and sleeping with a humidifier.
The best treatment I have found is vitamin E liquid-filled capsules. Break one open and rub the goo inside on your lips. Chop Saver is also good.

Re: cracked lips
When I went away to band camp, I was told to use ChopSaver and natural lip balms. I was also told to try and stay away from Chapstick brand lip balm and Blistex I believe it was because they have "shards' that cut your lip open to get the moisture of the balm into your lips and that playing with those "shards" is harmful in the long run.

Re: cracked lips
I slept with my dad's humidifier last night and my lips were much better this morning. As for the Chopsaver thing I'm going to stick with my good old Carmex. That Chopsaver stuFf is stupidly expensive.

Re: cracked lips
Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, and few people ever believe I know what I'm talking about; BUT Have you tried medicinal mineral-oil ?
The heavy grade is a laxative, so walk carefully past it. The one that might help is the light grade, which is sold as a "soothing body rub for irritated skin", which sounds promising. I was experimenting with it as a valve oil (too thick) but I was splashing it around pretty freely, and some of it seems to have got onto the mouthpiece, and naturally onto my lips. Like it says on the bottle, kinda soothing. Maybe half a drop rubbed over the lips before or after playing might help, or half a drop wiped onto the mouthpiece rim ? If half a drop doesn't work, maybe try a little more. Obviously you need to experiment on practice sessions, not a performance.
Like it says on the bottle "discontinue use if your condition worsens". Good luck and good health !

Search this forum for Carmex. You might change your mind after reading about it.dsfinley wrote:I slept with my dad's humidifier last night and my lips were much better this morning. As for the Chopsaver thing I'm going to stick with my good old Carmex. That Chopsaver stuFf is stupidly expensive.

Hmm I never knew those things about Carmex. Does anyone know anything about Burt's bees lip balm?

Re: cracked lips
I started using Burt's Bee's lip balm after reading some of the stuff about other products. I really like it. I am not a doctor, and I play at being a tuba player.

Have you eliminated the usual allergy suspects (mouthpiece metal, valve-oil, polish) ?

Re: cracked lips
Good old olive oil works well for me. I rub a little bit into my lips right before bed and they are usually fine by morning.

Re: cracked lips
ChopSaver is great! Even if it is $5.00- how often do you expect on going through a tube of it? Surely time in researching and reading these blogs is worth five bucks?
I would stay away from the Carmex. I am not sure what climate you are in but definitely explore a humidifier and turn off your ceiling fan if you have one and stay well hydrated.
I remember putting a bowl of water on my old fashioned heater come winter time while living in Boston to try and add some humidity.
I have tried other lip balms, and most have that peppermint extract that leaves a "numbing" effect that I personally dislike.
I have played my horns with no problem with ChopSaver on my lips. I live in a humid part of TX now so it is not often I need to worry about lip balm, but not having cracked lips and enjoying my practice/playing sessions (and perhaps the ability to earn more money with lips that respond better) pays for itself...

Re: cracked lips
My thing with the expensiveness of chopsaver is that I tend to leave chapstick in my pockets and it gets washed along with them. I may just give up on chapsticks period unless the problem still persists. I don't know.

Kind of like leaving expensive sunglasses places!dsfinley wrote:My thing with the expensiveness of chopsaver is that I tend to leave chapstick in my pockets and it gets washed along with them. I may just give up on chapsticks period unless the problem still persists. I don't know.
Perhaps try leaving it in your case and one on your vanity?

musiciansfriend.com has Chopsaver locked onto a price of $3.85 without the price of shipping and handling
